Tyzik’s Trumpet Will Work Ot In Superpops Concert

Jeff Tyzik is one fiery trumpeter.

Tyzik, the guest artist in the Spokane Symphony SuperPops concert Saturday night, is prone to reeling off incendiary jazz solos, both on his own jazz albums and as part of High Class Brass, a duo that includes fellow trumpeter Allen Vizzutti. SuperPops audiences might remember High Class Brass from a performance here several years ago.

On Saturday night, Tyzik will be on his own, and we can expect him to blast his way through solos in such songs as “When The Saints Go Marching In,” “Rialto Ripples” and “Here’s That Rainy Day.”

Yet Tyzik’s talents go far beyond performing, into areas that make him particularly suitable as a guest artist for a pops concert.

For one thing, he happens to be a well-respected pops conductor. He has served as the principal pops conductor for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra since 1993. He has also conducted dozens of other orchestras around the country, including the St. Louis Symphony, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Buffalo Philharmonic.

Naturally, he will handle all of the conducting chores in this concert, too.

For another thing, Tyzik is a world-class arranger. He has arranged, produced and composed works for many artists, most notably Doc Severinsen. He even won a Grammy in 1986 for his work with Severinsen.

Those arranging skills will be much in evidence during this concert: Tyzik arranged 11 of the 13 works on the bill.

The show will begin with Tyzik’s arrangements of “Malaguena,” “The Song of the Volga Boatman,” “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” and “Amazing Grace.”

Then comes Tyzik’s full orchestra version of “When the Saints Go Marching In,” with solos by Tyzik, clarinetist Virginia Jones and trombonist Dave Matern.

The first half ends with Tyzik’s “Fantasy on American Themes.”

The second half begins with Tyzik’s arrangement of Gabrieli’s Canzon XVI, followed by his arrangements of two Gershwin tunes, “The Man I Love” and “Rialto Ripples.”

The show will end with Carmichael’s “Here’s That Rainy Day” and a medley of Glenn Miller tunes, “Miller Memories,” both again, arranged by Tyzik.

So, what did Tyzik not arrange? There’s Mancini’s “Strings on Fire,” which presumably features a Mancini arrangement. Then there’s the Egmont Overture, which, of course, features an arrangement by a certain Ludwig Van Beethoven.
