Will Carlton scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds as No. 4 seed Georgetown, Ky., cruised to a 92-79 victory over Central Washington University in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division I men’s basketball tournament Friday at Tulsa, Okla.
The Tigers (34-3) advanced to today’s semifinals with several spurts that forced the Wildcats (19-11) to play catch up.
Georgetown went on a 6-0 run in the final 2:02 of the first half to take a 44-37 edge at intermission. Central Washington scored the next seven points to tie, but Wildcats trailed 55-44 after David Shee’s layup for Georgetown with 14:30 left.
Central Washington made up a 16-point deficit to come as close as 84-77. The Tigers, however, hit eight more free throws and limited Central to just one bucket in the final minute.
Central Washington, which entered the 1998 tournament as the winningest team in tournament history, was led by Leon Johnson’s 22 points and nine rebounds.
Women
No. 12 seed Lewis-Clark State College upset fifth-seeded Phillips University of Oklahoma 88-61 on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division I women’s basketball tournament in Jackson, Tenn.
Today, the Warriors (22-7) play Findlay (Ohio), which defeated Xavier (La.) 82-63.
The 27-point loss was the worst defeat of the year for the Fillies (25-7).
Amanda Campbell led the Warriors with 19 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists. Former Lakeside High player Lora Jolley had five points and four rebounds.
