Lake City Wins Twice In Softball

Lake City swept a softball double-header from Kennewick Saturday using two different styles.

The host Timberwolves won the first non-league game 8-7 when Kelly O’Hara opened the eighth inning with a triple and scored on a single by winning pitcher Courtney Zimmerman (2-0).

LC blazed ahead 7-0 after four innings and won the second game 9-5. Laura Baker and Monica Lang had runs batted in for the Timberwolves.

Post Falls also won twice, matching last year’s win total, by beating Cheney 5-4 and North Central 9-4 in non-league games at PF.

Becca Reed (1-1) struck out a career-high 12 in the win over NC.

Right fielder Stacey Weber threw out three runners at first base, the third coming with two on and two out in the seventh inning, as Coeur d’Alene (3-3) edged visiting Rogers 3-2 in a non-leaguer.

Weber, Kelli Babcock and Tara Lenz had RBIs for the Vikings, who open league play Friday. Rogers shortstop Crystal Perry had two hits, including a double.

Lewiston scored 12 runs when 28 illegal pitches were called on Jessica Pankratz, and the Bengals defeated visiting Gonzaga Prep 17-3 for a doubleheader split.

Monica Mark struck out 10 and walked none as G-Prep won the opener 9-2. G-Prep’s Kim McDonald finished the day 5 for 5, with four stolen bases.

Lindsey Jones went 5 for 7 as Clarkston (2-1) swept visiting Sandpoint 17-9, 14-3 in non-leaguers.

Baseball

Chris Wheaton tripled in the go-ahead run with nobody out in the seventh, then scored on pinch-hitter Geoff Larson’s double as visiting Lewis and Clark (2-0) defeated Lake City 4-2 in a non-leaguer.

The Timberwolves of Coeur d’Alene led 2-1 after Josh Merk’s two-run single in the fifth off Doug Adams.

D.J. Eberlin pitched five innings of one-hit ball in the opener and hit a three-run homer in the second game as St. Maries (2-3) swept visiting Grangeville 13-1, 17-7 in nonleague play.

Eberlin scored six runs and drove in five on the day. The Lumberjacks’ Galen Holdahl hit a grand slam in the opener and finished 4 for 6 with six RBIs, and Brian Lounsbury was 5 of 6, with four runs and four RBIs.

Track and field

Lake City’s boys and CdA’s girls placed third at the 14-team Lewiston Invitational.

For LC, Richard Novotny won the 300-meter hurdles in 42.6 seconds; Scott Bushnell placed second in the 100 in 11.0 and third in the 200 in 22.92; and Ryan Duncan’s runner-up shot put of 49 feet, 10 inches broke his school record.

Joe Getchius of fourth-place PF won the pole vault at 12-6.

Brenda Nipp won the 200 in 26.09 and the 400 in 1:00.54 to lead CdA’s girls. Andree Janee added a win in the long jump, at 17-7. Lake City freshman Mikltaela Euler placed second in the long jump (16-2).

Central Valley swept the team titles, with the host Bengals second.

Boys soccer

Tim Vanvalin scored twice, including an insurance goal in the final minute, as Lakeland beat Bonners Ferry 3-1 in the North Idaho League.

Jacob Tluid opened the second half with a goal for the Badgers (0-1).

Andy Dawes headed in Brandon Sorbel’s corner kick late in the first half, and Dusty Cash made two critical saves in the second half to preserve Moscow’s 1-0 non-league win over visiting Clarkston.
