Veteran Fighter Keeps His Title At U.S. Championships

Associated Press

Darnell Wilson, the oldest boxer in the U.S. Boxing Championships, outpointed Yamar Resto of Mililani Town, Hawaii, 30-8, to successfully defend his 156-pound title Saturday.

“Papa Smurf. Grandpa. Old Man. I get ‘em all,” the 31-year old from Lafayette, Ind., said.

The win helped keep alive Wilson’s dream of competing in the 2000 Summer Games. He’ll be 34 that year, just under the maximum age for competing in the Olympics.

In other matches Saturday, Olanda Anderson of Fort Carson, Colo., upset two-time 178-pound defending champion Anthony Stewart of Chicago, 11-10.

DaVarryl Williamson of Washington, D.C., the 1996 and ‘97 champ, won his third straight 201-pound crown by outpointing Calvin Brock of Charlotte, N.C., 9-4

Clarence Vinson of Washington, D.C., retained his 112-pound title with a 21-12 decision over John Medina of Fort Carson.

Other winners included Ronald Siler of Cincinnati, 106 pounds; Antonio Rodriquez of Wailuku, Hawaii, 119; Michael Evans of Dayton, Ohio, 125; Jacob Hudson of Augusta, Ga., 132, and Ricardo Williams, Jr. of Cincinnati, 139.
