Leaf Struts His Stuff For Scouts Former WSU Quarterback Tries To Sway Nfl Officials
Ryan Leaf is about to get his first chance since the Rose Bowl to show off his skills to NFL coaches and scouts.
The quarterback will work out at Washington State University on Thursday and hold a second session April 2.
Leaf, who is expected to be chosen as the first or second pick in next month’s NFL draft, did not take part in drills at last month’s NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.
Former Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning, who is considered Leaf’s top competitor for the first selection, already has held a workout for NFL coaches and scouts at his school.
The Indianapolis Colts have the first draft selection, with San Diego choosing second.
“If I go to Indy, I’m the first pick in the draft,” Leaf said. “If I go to San Diego, I’m living in San Diego. So it’s pretty much a win-win situation.”
Earlier this month, San Diego made a blockbuster deal with Arizona to guarantee that the Chargers will be able to draft either Manning or Leaf in April’s draft. San Diego sent two players and three draft picks, including first-rounders this year and next, to Arizona to move up one spot, from third to second.
Leaf decided to skip his final season at Washington State after leading the Cougars to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 67 years.
He recently moved to Newport Beach, Calif., where he lives in a one-bedroom apartment. He said he plans to finish college next spring.
