William Black Spokane

Memorial service for William S. Black, 66, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Black, who was born in Great Falls, Mont., died Monday.

He graduated in 1953 from the University of Montana with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He was also a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity.

Mr. Black then served in the Air Force and was discharged as a captain.

After working in insurance for five years in Spokane and San Francisco, he began his 25-year career with Rogers and Rogers Insurance Company, eventually becoming the owner, president and chief executive officer.

Mr. Black was selected as the official insurance representative for Spokane’s Expo ‘74. He designed, marketed and serviced the entire insurance program for the foreign nationals and all exhibitors.

He served on numerous insurance advisory panels and committees and was president in 1964 of the Independent Agents of Spokane. That same year he was awarded the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation.

Mr. Black served as president of the Washington Association of Insurance Agents.

He served on the executive board of the Boys Scouts of America and was vice president of the Inland Empire Council in 1981. That year, Mr. Black received the Silver Beaver Award in honor of his contributions to the community and to the Inland Empire Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Black was a past member of the boards of directors of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce and Associated General Contractors. He also was a founder of Spokane Business Assisting Scholastic Excellence (SBASE) and was past president of Sacajawea Junior High School’s Parent Teacher Group.

He was elected in 1975 to serve on the Fifth Congressional District board for the Association of Washington Business and was nominated in 1976 to serve a three-year term on the board of trustees of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce.

He also was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Spokane. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Donna; two sons, Steven and John Black, both of Spokane, and five grandchildren.

Ann Germo Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Ann Marie Murray Dickinson Germo, 95, will be at 1 p.m. today at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Germo, who was born in Otis Orchards, died Tuesday.

She grew up in Otis Orchards, attended Cheney Normal School and began teaching in Post Falls.

Mrs. Germo spent most of her teaching career in Kellogg, Idaho, retiring as principal of Silver King School in 1965.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and served as state president of the Idaho Education Association.

Mrs. Germo was a member of the Business Women, Parent Teacher Association and the Idaho Retired Teachers.

She received the Award of Appreciation from the Idaho Masonic Grand Lodge, and the Association Hall of Fame Award from the Idaho Retired Teachers.

She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary and St. Andrew’s Society.

Her husband, Severt, died in 1996.

Survivors include three grandchildren, Taryn Warren of California, Brenda Dickinson of Kent, Wash., and Mark Dickinson of Maple Valley, Wash.; and four great-grandchildren.

Walter ‘Tony’ Trach Sr. Spokane

Graveside service for Walter A. “Tony” Trach Sr., 56, will be at 1 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Trach, who was born in Syracuse, N.Y., died Saturday.

He served in the Air Force and moved to Spokane from Centralia, Wash., 10 years ago.

Mr. Trach worked on the green chain in a lumber mill.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; a son, Walter Trach Jr. and a daughter, Amanda Trach, both of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Susan Graham of Auburn, Wash.; two brothers, John and William Trach, both of Syracuse; four sisters, Harriet Bonfe, Barbara Lucia and Katherine Trach, all of Syracuse, and Suzanne Mendosa of Clarksburg, W.Va.; and five grandchildren.

Paul ‘Jeff’ Grier Sr. Spokane

Vigil service for Paul “Jeff” Grier Sr., 66, will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home - North. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Grier, a 32-year Spokane resident, died Monday in Tucson, Ariz., while vacationing.

He was born in Minot, N.D., and graduated from the University of North Dakota.

Mr. Grier moved to Spokane in 1966 from Missoula and began working in 1969 for Rosauers Supermarkets at the Sullivan Road store in the Spokane Valley. He retired in 1995.

He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, Cougar Club, Eagles Lodge and United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1439.

His wife of 27 years, Julia Grier, died in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Paul Grier Jr. of Spokane; six daughters, Kathleen Farokhshad, Martha, Margaret and Julia Grier, all of Spokane, Louise Martin of Colfax, Wash., and Laura Grier of Tempe, Ariz.; a sister, Dorothy Barsness of Minnesota; and four grandchildren.

Pedro Jimenez Greenacres

Visitation for Pedro V. Jimenez, 93, will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will follow Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. There will be private burial.

Mr. Jimenez, who was born in San Juan, Iloco Sur, Philippines, died Tuesday.

He moved to the United States in 1925 and worked in Alaska and Seattle before moving to Spokane in 1935.

Mr. Jimenez worked for the Elks Lodge for 19 years and then was a barber at First and Jefferson. He later worked for the Spokane Country Club until his retirement in 1984.

He was an avid gardener.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Betty; two sons, Tino and Daniel Jimenez; two daughters, Mary Jo Coe and Louise Pedersen; a brother, Fred Jimenez; a sister, Edurda Sales; and eight grandchildren.

Lydia Schultz Harrington, Wash.

Visitation for Lydia Schultz, 89, will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today and from 12:45 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Harrington.

Mrs. Schultz, who was born in Farmer, Wash., died Tuesday.

She was a homemaker and a 72-year resident of Harrington.

Mrs. Schultz was a member of Harrington Community Church, a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Bluestem Grange, a member of the National Grange and the Washington Association of Wheat Growers.

Her husband, Adolph Schultz, died in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Robert Schultz of Harrington; a daughter, Lois Rogers of Otis Orchards; a stepsister, Edna Ogle of Waterville, Wash.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lucile Gesinger Spokane

Funeral Mass for Lucile M. Gesinger, 88, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gesinger, who was born in Midland, S.D., died Tuesday.

She moved to Spokane in 1946.

Mrs. Gesinger was a homemaker and a member of St. Thomas More Parish.

Survivors include her husband, Fred; three sons, Garald of Spokane, Darald of Seattle and James of Florida, and eight grandchildren.

Catherine Robertson Spokane

No service will be held for Catherine Robertson at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Robertson, a 35-year Spokane resident died Sunday. She was 93.

She was born in Russia, and worked as a cook for the Tower Restaurant.

Survivors include her husband, David; two daughters, Marlene Sparks of Battle Ground, Wash., and Micky Pingo of Portland; three sisters, Bertha Watson and Peggy Hauslick, both of Wisconsin, and Sophie Martin of California; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Madeline ‘Aunt Tootsie’ Roth Spokane

Vigil service for Madeline “Aunt Tootsie” Roth, 96, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Mrs. Roth, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Guy, died in 1969.

Survivors include a sister, Cecelia Clem.

L.C. ‘Chuck’ Nihoul Mesa, Ariz.

Memorial service for L.C. “Chuck” Nihoul, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Master Presbyterian Church in Mesa. Bunkers Desert View Chapel in Mesa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nihoul, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.

In 1933 he graduated from Malden (Wash.) High School and then in 1938 from Washington State College, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Mr. Nihoul worked as the manager of the Sprague Grange Supply for 15 years before moving to Othello, Wash., in 1965 and becoming a Farmers Insurance agent there.

After retirement, he moved to Kennewick in 1984 and then to Mesa in about 1992.

His first wife of 43 years, Letha Nihoul, died in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen; a daughter, Suzanne Lewis of Renton, Wash.; three sons, Lou Nihoul of Hayward, Calif., Tom Nihoul of Spokane and Tim Nihoul of Auburn, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Sandy Morgan of Puyallup, Wash.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Everett Swope Post Falls

Graveside memorial service for Everett R. Swope, 83, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Coeur d’Alene Forrest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Swope, who was born in Little Rock, Ark., died Monday.

He lived in Spokane for many years where he was a member of Eagles Lodge 2.

Mr. Swope worked as a laborer in construction.

He also resided in the Colville, Wash., area for a number of years and has spent the last 27 years in Post Falls.

Mr. Swope was an active member of the Mica Flats Grange.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ina; four daughters, Deloris Burke, Bonnie Stoddard and Marilyn Cosgriff, all of Spokane, and Debi Bender of Clayton, Wash.; a son, Bill Swope of Columbia Falls, Mont.; a brother, Oscar Swope of Centralia, Wash.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Clorinda ‘Mama’ Dominguez Abeyta Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Clorinda Marie Dominguez “Mama” Abeyta, 76, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Praise Church in Bonners Ferry. Burial will be in Hilo, Hawaii, at a later date. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Abeyta, who was born in New Mexico, died Sunday.

She lived in Denver for many years before moving to Bonners Ferry in 1976, where she opened, “Mama’s Mexican Food Restaurant.”

Mrs. Abeyta closed the restaurant and later moved to Hawaii in the early 1990s where she lived for three years before returning to Bonners Ferry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix.

Survivors include three sons, Roger and David Abeyta, both of Hawaii, and Larry Abeyta of Bonners Ferry; four daughters, Lucy Jensen and Linda Lopez, both of Bonners Ferry, Judy Dillin of Ephrata, Wash., and Patsy Youngwirth of Post Falls; 28 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Leonard Berthoud Spokane

Private memorial graveside service for Leonard Berthoud, 74, will be held in Montana at a later date. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Berthoud, who was born in Port Angeles, Wash., and raised in Montana, died Monday.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

In 1947 he married Margaret King in Montana.

Mr. Berthoud worked as a driver for the Greyhound Bus service for 35 years until his retirement in 1983.

He was a 21-year resident of Spokane.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Janelle Krum of Spokane; two sons, William and James Berthoud, both of Missoula; a brother, A.G. Berthoud of Bucoda, Wash.; a sister, Thelma Ohmie of Sumner, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Edward Foley Chewelah, Wash.

Memorial service for Edward John Foley, 64, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church in Chewelah. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Foley, who was born in Butte, Mont., died Monday.

In 1963 he married Sue Graham in Miami, Okla., and they lived in Tulsa, Okla., where he worked for Rockwell International.

He retired in 1978 and they moved to Chewelah in 1980.

Mr. Foley was a member of the American Legion Post 54 in Chewelah, the Senior Citizens Bowling Team in Chewelah and St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carol Gourlie of Colville, Wash., and Charlene Green of Coweta, Okla.; two sisters, Dorothy Foley of Portland and Ethel Lyons of Great Falls, Mont.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mary (Andrist) Remitz Florence, Ariz.

Memorial service for Mary A. (Andrist) Remitz, 43, will be held at a later date in Chewelah, Wash.

Mrs. Remitz, who was born in Chewelah, died Feb. 28.

She graduated from Chewelah High School and had worked for a deep-sea fishing business at Kodiak, Alaska, for a few years.

Mrs. Remitz was a former owner of the Burro Inn at Diamond Lake, Wash., and was a food service specialist and a retailer in Valdez, Alaska, where she lived for three years before moving to Tucson, Ariz., two years ago.

She was an honored Queen of Bethel No. 14 Job’s Daughters, a member of the Chewelah Chapter No. 101 Order of the Eastern Star and was a former Washington State Junior Miss contestant.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel; her mother, Kathryn Andrist of Chewelah; a brother, Alan Andrist; and a sister, Margaret Kineman, both of Seattle.

Harold Hatley Pullman

Service for Harold “Pat” Hatley, 79, was Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Pullman. Burial followed at Pullman City Cemetery.

Mr. Hatley, who died Wednesday, graduated from Pullman High School and then worked in farming.

He served in the Army during World War II, serving first in Hawaii and later in Guam. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to Pullman.

He farmed for five years in Fairfield, Wash., and then moved back to Pullman and the Chambers, Wash., area. In 1971 he married Dawn Murray Hubbard in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

Mr. Hatley received his 30-year pin at the Soil Conservation Convention in Spokane last December .

He was a member of Pullman Presbyterian Church, served as deacon and usher, and helped develop the church’s rose garden.

Mr. Hatley was active in Ewartsville Grange, where he received his 60-year pin in 1997. He was a member of the Pullman Kiwanis Club, the Palouse Hills Good Sam Chapter, the Moose Lodge in Pullman and the Elks Lodge in Colfax, Wash.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dennis Hatley of Pullman, Allen Hatley of Spokane and Darrel Hatley of Kennewick; three stepdaughters, Terri White of Sunnyside, Wash., Heidi Hubbard of Moscow, Idaho, and Julie Polworth of Seattle; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Robyn Laurich Spokane

Service for Robyn Colene Laurich, 45, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Laurich, who was born in Santa Rosa, Calif., died Tuesday.

She worked at the Morning Star Boys Ranch for 12 years and was a 30-year Spokane resident.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn; a son, Marcus Rickeard of Spokane; three daughters, Leona Laurich and Tricia Rickeard both of Spokane, and Diona Green of Virginia; parents, Ken and Bonnie Rose of Spokane; a brother, Larry Rose, and a sister, Lois Rose, both of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Alice Heyner Spokane

No service will be held for Alice C. Heyner, 84. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Heyner, who was born in Westfield, N.J., died Tuesday.

She moved to Spokane in 1969 and worked as a secretary for School District 81 vocational education department. Following her retirement in 1980, she began travelling.

Mrs. Heyner was active in volunteer work for public television, the program “Sit and Be Fit,” Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary, Unity Church, where she was a member, and Corbin Senior Center.

Her husband, Frank Heyner, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Penelope Tenold of Spokane; a son, Robert Heyner of Cumberland, Maine; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Gordon Berk Spokane

A private service for Gordon W. Berk, 74, will be held. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Berk, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Berk worked as a supervisor at Welk Brothers Metal for more than 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; a son, Alan Berk of Spokane; three sisters, Elaine Staak, Carolyn Harbert and Marilyn Moore, all of Spokane; and a grandson.

Bernard Wissink Spokane

Private service will be held for Bernard J. Wissink, 82. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wissink, who was born in Nez Perce, Idaho, died March 20.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1941 to 1946 and was a resident of Spokane for more than 50 years. He worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Mead.

Mr. Wissink was a member of St. Charles Parish, Knights of Columbus and the Steelworkers Union.

His wife, Dorothy Wissink, died in 1993.

He is survived by a son, Bernard Wissink of Spokane; a brother, Alfred Wissink of Spokane; and four sisters, Elizabeth Schmidlkoffer, Margaret Fischer and Alma Siecinksi, all of Spokane, and Dolores Dumas of Albuquerque, N.M.
