Prospect Of Signing Askew A Joke To Karl

Tacoma News Tribune

The Portland Trail Blazers waived former Seattle SuperSonics player Vincent Askew on Tuesday.

Sonics coach George Karl said it would be a cold day in Baghdad before he gave his former CBA player a second chance.

“I told my assistants to shoot me if I ever advised them to bring him back,” Karl said of his one-time good friend.

Askew wouldn’t be the worst fit for the Sonics, particularly since Nate McMillan’s future status is uncertain and David Wingate is on the injured list with a hamstring injury.

All the Sonics would have to do to acquire Askew would be to release George Zidek and sign Askew to a 10-day contract.

But Askew burned his bridges with the Sonics when he intentionally skipped a practice during the 1996 NBA Finals because he felt he wasn’t getting enough playing time.

He was traded that summer.
