Netscape, Excite Unite
Netscape Communications Corp. on Monday said it reached a $70 million agreement to make Excite the Internet search engine on Netscape’s popular home page.
Excite is paying Netscape that amount upfront in exchange for getting strong visibility on the Web site and a share of revenue from advertisements placed there.
Netscape, which had used Excite’s search-engine rivals, is renaming the Netcenter site to Netscape Search Powered by Excite.
Netscape’s Web site is the default portal to the Internet for millions of people using its popular browser for viewing information on the Web. It’s the second most popular site on the Web, according to Media Metrix and Relevant Knowledge, two firms that track Web usage.
