Ferris, G-Prep Win

Gonzaga Prep and Ferris began the Greater Spokane League boys soccer season five weeks ago with a tense match, won by Prep in a shootout.

Another installment of their rivalry was set up Wednesday as both won loser-out openers of the District 8-4A tournament.

Second-seeded Ferris defeated No. 5 Central Valley 4-1 while No. 4 G-Prep edged No. 3 North Central 2-1 after a second shootout.

Both winners are 12-5 heading into Saturday’s 1 p.m. loser-out match at Ferris. The winner plays at league champion Shadle Park (12-3) at 4 p.m. Tuesday for seeding to the state tournament.

At NC, overtime and a first shootout didn’t settle the match, but the Bullpups won a sudden-death shootout 2-1 to eliminate the Indians (10-6).

At University High, Garth Cummings scored twice and Abbas Faridnia had two assists as the Saxons eliminated the Bears (7-9). CV fired off six quick shots early in the second half, including a goal by Andy Sather, but Ferris responded with two goals.

Boys golf

East Valley’s Luke Damskov had a hole-in-one during a non-league match with Lakeside at MeadowWood Golf Course.

Damskov used a pitching wedge on the 17th hole, a 133-yard par-3.
