Making Shift From Elementary To Middle School Focus Of Talk

Amy Scribner Staff writer

Just in time for the end of the school year, Spokane School District is teaming up with the Spokane County Medical Auxiliary to help families facing one big transition next year.

Dr. James States, a local adolescent medicine specialist, will speak at 7 p.m. tonight at Chase Middle School. States will talk about the challenges as students move from elementary school to middle school and on to high school. He will suggest ways to teach children to cope with stresses at school and peer pressures, including how to help children avoid drug and alcohol use and eating disorders.

Parents and sixth-graders are invited to attend the free seminar.

Ferris’ yearbook wins award

This year’s edition of the Exeter, Ferris’ yearbook, has been honored with a Special Achievement Award from Taylor Publishing. The award is based on overall dedication, effort and accomplishments.

“This is truly an outstanding accomplishment, considering only five percent of the books Taylor publishes each year can be showcased,” said Ferris Principal Jon Bentz.

Franklin PTG president honored

Martha Jones, PTG president at Franklin Elementary, was selected from 4,000 district volunteers to receive an outstanding volunteer award.

Jones has spent many hours at Franklin and is an active volunteer in the community.

She also lobbied for the Cooper Jones Act, which includes a bicycle safety program, in honor of her son Cooper, who was killed in a traffic accident last year.

Jones received a letter of commendation from Superintendent Gary Livingston and a pin and plaque recognizing her volunteer work.

South Side students set the pace

Several South Side students have been recognized with PaceSetter awards.

The awards, which include a $50 savings bond, recognize students who demonstrate outstanding progress in career preparation. Pathways is a communitywide initiative to help area students with the transition from school to work.

To qualify, students completed 75 hours of community service and work experience related to their career pathway.

PaceSetter winners from Lewis and Clark High School are Jack Claros and Marcus Davis. Ferris winners are Alexis Butler and Tracy Poindexter.
