Man Held After Crash Escapes

A Spokane man was on the loose late Thursday after escaping from sheriff’s deputies at Sacred Heart Medical Center, deputies said.

Donald R. Powers, 36, was taken by deputies to the hospital with head and rib injuries after he rammed a car into barriers on a Spokane Valley dead-end road.

After deputies removed his handcuffs in the X-ray room at the hospital, Powers ran off and has not been located, deputies said.

The incident began on South Riverway Avenue about 4 p.m. Thursday when the driver of a stolen westbound car slammed into a parked car and hit two barriers at the intersection with Park Road.

The driver ran from deputies and Washington State Patrol troopers. He was caught after a short foot chase, deputies said.

A passenger in the car, Gillam Rogers, 42, of Spokane suffered facial lacerations and a broken arm in the crash.
