Obituaries

James Johnston Coeur d’Alene

Mass for James Leo Johnston, 71, will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnston, who was born in Utah, died Thursday.

He grew up in Rock Springs, Wyo., and served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Johnston moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1952 and worked as a mechanic for Robideaux Motors for several years and then worked for General Instruments as a machinist before retiring in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Severtson of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; two brothers, John Johnston of California and Louis Johnston of Montana; a sister, Phyllis Hudson of California; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Cristopher Berger Spokane

Funeral for Cristopher Walter Berger, 36, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the Church of Christ in Pullman. Burial will follow at Pullman City Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Berger, who was born in Pullman, died Wednesday of leukemia.

He graduated in 1979 from Pullman High School and was active in the Babe Ruth Baseball Program.

Following high school, he worked at the Campus Chevron Station for seven years.

Mr. Berger moved to Spokane in 1989 and worked in the residential and commercial construction industry. For the past several years he had worked for Ray’s Painting in Spokane.

He raced motorcycles in the Mickey Thompson Circuit in the Western United States and specialized in Quad Racing over the past few years. He was National Champion 1995 to 1996 on the East Coast.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Carolyn and Larry Warner of Colton, Wash.; his father, Richard Berger of Moscow, Idaho; two brothers, Mark Berger of Spokane and Perry Berger of Pullman; his grandmothers, Annie Vernon of Bonners Ferry, Idaho and Esther Tierney of Lewiston.

Don Roberts Spokane

Funeral for Don H. Roberts, 62, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Roberts, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He graduated in 1953 from Lewis and Clark High School and then served in the Army for two years as a military police officer.

Mr. Roberts worked as a truck driver most recently for J.J. Williams.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union and the Valley Jaycees.

Survivors include two daughters, Nichole Elske of Spokane and Michele Rachels of North Hollywood, Calif.; a son, Kevin Johnson of Simi Valley, Calif.; his mother, Floris Roberts of Spokane; two brothers, Randall Roberts of Centralia, Wash., and Gary Roberts of Anaheim, Calif.; three sisters, Mae Sommers of Spokane, Eileen Richardson of California and Shirley Schroeder of Dillingham, Alaska; and two grandchildren.

George ‘Scotty’ Scott Cheney

Memorial service for George Larkham “Scotty” Scott, 92, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cheney United Methodist Church in Cheney. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Scott, who was born in Neligh, Neb., died April 15.

He played the French horn in the Spokane Philharmonic and trombone in a small band at the Davenport Hotel.

In 1925 he left Spokane to study French horn and organ at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

While in Boston, he played with the Conservatory Orchestra.

In 1940, Mr. Scott received a bachelor’s degree from St. Louis Institute of Music. In 1942, he received a master’s degree in composition from the University of Michigan.

From 1942 to 1951, he was professor of music at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., teaching music theory, organ and French horn.

During that period, he played French horn in the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

He joined the Washington State University music faculty in 1951 and taught music theory, organ and French horn.

After his retirement in 1971, he moved to Spokane and later to Cheney, where he was an organist for many years at Cheney United Methodist Church.

Mr. Scott was a member of the Masons.

Survivors include two sons, Roger Scott of Fremont, Calif., and George Scott IV of Phoenix; a daughter, Shannon Wade of Clearlake, Calif.; a sister, Jessie Wilson of Seattle; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cheney United Methodist Church.

Larry Grigsby Spokane

Visitation for Larry D. Grigsby, 22, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today, Tuesday and Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at Fowler United Methodist Church. Private family burial will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Grigsby, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday of cancer.

He graduated in 1994 from North Central High School and worked for Head Start as a day care worker.

Mr. Grigsby played golf for the North Central golf team.

Survivors include his parents, Clyde and Barbara Grigsby; a brother, Andy Grigsby; and grandparents, John and Betty Grigsby, all of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Candle Lighters.

Mary Wilbur Spokane

Funeral for Mary K. Wilbur, 75, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Wilbur, who died Thursday, was born in Lemons, Mo.

In 1940 she married Clifford Wilbur in Olathe, Kan., and moved to Spokane in 1945.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sharon Olsen of Spokane; two brothers, Robert Lightfoot of Medical Lake and James Lightfoot of Nine Mile Falls; a sister, Betty Tallerday of Spokane; two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
