Gertrude Hanson Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Gertrude Jean Hanson, 62, will be today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel with a reception to follow. Mrs. Hanson, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Friday.

She lived in Spokane from 1961 to1963 and then moved to Moscow and graduated from the University of Idaho with a master’s degree.

Mrs. Hanson returned to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1974 and worked as a teacher and speech therapist and was a volunteer for many organizations, including Hospice of North Idaho.

She was a member of the Kootenai Environmental Alliance and the Citizens Advisory Committee for Non-Game Idaho Wildlife, served as chairperson of the Citizens Against Nuclear Weapons and Extermination and was vice president of the Rural Kootenai Organization.

Mrs. Hanson was vice chairperson of Hanford Health Information Network and a member of the Citizens Advisory Panel of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory.

Her first husband, Dean Gosselin, died in 1969.

Survivors include her husband, Wesley; a son, Jay Gosselin of Seattle; two daughters, Lonnette Norris of Arizona and Janine Nesheim of Alaska; two brothers, Aljoe Carder of Oregon and Robert Carder of Nevada; and one grandchild.

James Johnston Coeur d’Alene

Mass for James Leo Johnston, 71, will be today at 3 p.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnston, who was born in Nebraska, died Thursday.

He grew up in Rock Springs, Wyo., and served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Johnston moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1952 and worked as a mechanic for Robideaux Motors for several years and then worked for General Instruments as a machinist, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Severtson of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; two brothers, John Johnston of California and Louis Johnston of Montana; a sister, Phyllis Hudson of California; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Anna Vendramin Clarkston, Wash.

Graveside service for Anna Louise Vendramin, 74, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake, Idaho. Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Vendramin, who was born in Spirit Lake, Idaho, died Friday.

She graduated in 1942 from Spirit Lake High School and in 1947 married Leo Vendramin in Spokane.

Mrs. Vendramin was a civil service employee at Farragut Naval Training Center. She then worked in Spokane in the accounting department for General Motors Acceptance Corp. before moving in 1968 to Clarkston.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Keith Vendramin of Richland; a daughter, Joan Vendramin Bonacum of Spokane; a brother, Kenneth Rogstad of Post Falls; and one granddaughter.

Lucile Hartman Spokane

Funeral Mass for Lucile M. Hartman, 87, was Monday at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. Burial followed at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Hartman, who was born in Deer Lodge, Mont., died Friday.

She moved to Spokane in 1940 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Hartman was a member of St. Augustine Parish and the Pope John Guild.

Her husband, John Hartman, died in 1986.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann Ardner of Gresham, Ore., and Donna Keith of Lacey, Wash.; two sisters, Mary Lake of Missoula and Katie Toombs of Helena; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Anna Margason Kellogg

Service for Anna C. Margason, 83, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg.

Mrs. Margason, who was born in Minnesota, died Saturday.

She moved to the Silver Valley in 1936 from South Dakota and worked as a cook at various restaurants in Kellogg and also worked at the Bunker Hill Smelter during World War II.

Her husband, Luther, died in 1973.

Survivors include three sons, Jim, George and Richard Margason, all of Kellogg; two daughters, Vi Tyree of Kellogg and JoAnne Doff of Post Falls; three sisters, Rose Hugent of Utah, Gerdy McDaniels of South Dakota and Lenia Kuneff of Montana; a brother, Albert Scheid of Montana; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Richard Walton Spokane

No service will be held for Richard S. Walton, 76, at his request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Walton, who was born in Deer Park, died Friday from of multiple complications related to diabetes.

He was raised in Moscow, Idaho, and graduated from the University of Idaho.

Mr. Walton served in the Army during World War II.

He moved to Spokane in 1947. Following a 15-year career as a commercial artist, he taught art for Spokane School District 81 for 15 years before his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Leatha; a daughter, Jo Ann Beers of Spokane; three sons, Gary, Kirk and Frank Walton, all of Spokane; a sister, Dorothy Wright of South Carolina; a brother, Charles Walton III of Moscow; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Inland Empire Diabetes Association.

Nettie Gale Clarkston, Wash.

Memorial service for Nettie Adeline Gale, 89, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Potlatch (Idaho) Presbyterian Church. Inurnment was held at Freeze Cemetery north of Potlatch. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gale, who was born in Spangle, died Wednesday.

Her family moved to a ranch on Maple Creek near Harvard, Idaho, in 1911 and she graduated in 1927 from Potlatch High School.

Mrs. Gale worked as a pianist for the Forth Thomas Dance Band for several years in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

In 1933, she married Lee Gale in Colfax and they eventually settled in Colfax.

She started giving piano lessons in 1947 and continued for more than 30 years. She was active in the Potlatch Theater group and 4-H Club leadership in Potlatch.

Mrs. Gale was a member of Potlatch Presbyterian Church, Potlatch Library Board and Presbyterian Women’s Association.

In 1995 she and her husband moved to Clarkston, Wash.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Lee Gale of Lewiston and David Gale of Bellingham; two daughters, Judith Gale Capellen of Astoria, Ore., and Patricia Gale Born of Sedro Woolley, Wash.; a brother, Joe Gleason, and a sister, Margaret Gleason Peer, both of Lewiston; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

George Strenge Spokane

Graveside memorial service for George H. Strenge, 50, will be at 3 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home - North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Strenge, a 44-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

He was born in Pittsburgh and moved to Spokane in 1954.

Mr. Strenge had worked for the past 12 years for Pacific Process Services in the debt collections department and in process serving.

He is survived by a brother, Robert Strenge, of Spokane.

Peggy Elsasser Elmira, Idaho

Service for Peggy V. Elsasser, 64, was held Monday at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Burial followed at Lakeview Cemetery near Sandpoint.

Mrs. Elsasser, who was born in North Carolina, died Wednesday.

She graduated from high school in North Carolina in 1952 and moved to Sandpoint in 1953.

Mrs. Elsasser settled in the Elmira area near Sandpoint in 1954 and helped operate a family logging and farming operation.

She grew oats and barley and operated a vegetable stand on U.S. Highway 95.

Mrs. Elsasser was a former member of the Elmira Cackle Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill.

Survivors include two daughters, Ezrael of Elmira and Jane Fowler of Coeur d’Alene; nine grandchildren, Karen, Sarah, Adam, Paul, Seth, John, Jennifer, Jason and Kyle; and one great-grandson, Eric.

Wayne Smith Moscow, Idaho

Burial for Wayne Newton Smith, 85, will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, Calif., at a later date. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born Des Moines, Iowa, died Wednesday.

He graduated from high school in Detroit and worked as a carpenter most of his life.

Mr. Smith was employed building Thrifty-Mart grocery stores in Southern California. He retired in 1970.

After his retirement, he continued to live in Culver City, Calif., until 1972 when he moved to Post Falls. In 1974 he moved to Moscow.

He was a member of the Carpenters Union in California.

Survivors include a son, Wayne Smith Jr. of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Dee Acuff of Viola, Idaho and Susan Langer of Mesa, Ariz.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

John Leigh Spokane

Memorial service for John D. Leigh, 72, will be at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Leigh, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

He graduated in 1944 from Lewis and Clark High School and then served in the Army. He was captured by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge.

After his discharge from the Army, he graduated from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., in 1952 with a degree in architecture.

Mr. Leigh was made a partner of ALSC Architects in 1954 and retired in 1992.

In 1977 he married Hilda Anson in Reno, Nev.

Survivors include his wife; two stepdaughters, Sheila Durkoop of Spokane and Jackie Cuddy of Seattle; a brother, William Leigh of California; a sister, Mary Muller of Portland; and four step-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Whitman College Scholarship Fund or First Presbyterian Church.

Rebecca Whitlock Spokane

Private graveside service for Rebecca “Becky” Whitlock, 43, was Monday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Whitlock, who died Friday, was born in East Chicago, Ind.

She graduated from Washington High School in East Chicago and moved to Spokane in 1973 from Hammond, Ind.

Mrs. Whitlcok worked for 15 years with Spokane Community College as assistant manger in the bookstore.

She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Bobby; her mother, Santa Chavez of Spokane; her father, Frank Chavez of Tennessee; and two sisters, Rose Greer and Mary Theil, both of Spokane.

Helen Repp Colfax, Wash.

Burial for Helen Repp, 85, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Endicott (Wash.) Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott.

Born in Dayton, Wash., Mrs. Repp died Friday.

In 1928 she married Adam Repp in Spokane and they farmed in the Endicott area before moving in 1936 to the Colfax farm on Union Flat.

Her husband died in 1970.

She moved into Colfax in 1997 and was a member of Colfax Women’s Bowling Association and Trinity Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and sang solos for weddings and funerals.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Covert of Spokane; a sister, Erma Agee of Colfax; a brother, Robert Bruce of Sunnyvale, Calif.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Viola Malcolm Veradale

Visitation for Viola Malcolm, 88, will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Malcolm, who was born in Lauree, Mont., died Sunday.

She was raised in Butte, Mont., and graduated from Butte High School.

Mrs. Malcolm then graduated from the Dillon (Mont.) Normal College and from Eastern Washington University in education.

In 1931 she married Clifton Malcolm and taught in rural areas near Livingston, Mont., for several years.

They moved to Spokane from Anchorage, Alaska, in 1948 and she taught in the Central Valley School District. She taught first grade at Opportunity, University and McDonald elementary schools before retiring in 1974.

Mrs. Malcolm was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Central Valley Education Association. She was also an accomplished pianist.

Her husband of 63 years, Clifton Malcolm, died in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Nelson of Spokane, and a son, Douglas Malcolm, both of Spokane; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Hazel Rasmussen Spokane

Graveside service for Hazel M.L. Rasmussen, 89, was Monday at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Rasmussen, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.

She worked as a billing clerk in the freight industry.

Mrs. Rasmussen was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Sunset Grange, Eagles Lodge No. 2 and the Sons of Norway.

Her husband, Harold Rasmussen, died in 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Edythe Coyle of Mead; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
