Dollar Rises Against Yen, Mark

The dollar rose slightly against the Japanese yen Wednesday as fears of intervention held the currency back even as political turmoil in Asia threatened to push the dollar higher.

The dollar rose modestly against the German mark, which was weakened by a fall against the British pound.

Initially, investors dumped Asian currencies in favor of the dollar because of violent riots in Indonesia, India’s continued nuclear testing and the ongoing Asian financial problems. But then investors started dumping the dollar and turning to the Swiss franc.
