Local Cable Programming Proposed
The Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries wants to expand its message of respect and understanding among religious faiths by providing up to 20 hours a week of local programming for cable TV’s Odyssey, Channel 43.
Before committing to the project, however, organizers need to determine if enough area churches would become involved and provide financial support, said Mary Stamp of the Council of Ecumenical Ministries.
A committee for local programming on the faith and values channel has been formed, but representatives from a variety of denominations and faith groups are needed to help review proposed programs. Preliminary ideas include interview shows, inspirational programs, and even entire worship services.
The only rules local groups must follow are no soliciting of funds, demeaning other faiths or proselytizing. Stamp sees the project as a great way to teach people about other faiths and in so doing break down stereotypes and promote respect.
“It’s wonderful to explain different faiths,” said Stamp. “It would give a visibility to the religious community.”

‘Company’ to benefit homeless
Homeless families will benefit from a special performance next week of Stephen Sondheim’s musical comedy “Company” staged by Spokane Civic Theatre.
Wednesday’s 8 p.m. production will benefit Interfaith Hospitality Network, a group of local churches that provides housing and support to this area’s homeless families.
A silent auction at 7 p.m. will precede the performance. Tickets, $17.50, can be purchased by calling 624-9151 or 747-5487. Tickets will not be available at the door.
Joint concerts planned
The choirs of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist will combine voices for a special concert at 3 p.m. Sunday.
“Spring Spectacular” will feature music for two choirs, massed choir and organ, and anthems for choirs, brass and percussion. Each choir will also perform works from its individual repertoire.
Sunday’s free concert will be at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside, and will be repeated at 3 p.m. May 31 at St. John’s Cathedral, 127 E. 12th.
