UI Communications Students Win Scholarships

Three Local University of Idaho School of Communication students have won $500 scholarships from the Idaho State Broadcasters Association. The scholarships are awarded annually to Idaho students majoring in communication.

The students, all visual communications majors, are Andy Favor and Joe Taylor, both of Coeur d’Alene, and Jadie Zimmerman, of Troy.

University of Idaho visual communications major Kelli Johnson has been recognized as one of the outstanding college journalists in the Inland Northwest by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Johnson, who is from Moscow, earned a first-place award in the organization’s recent Mark of Excellence contest for college journalists for her video report on international students on the UI men’s and women’s track teams. The report originally appeared last year on “U of I Experience,” a student-produced program on UITV Channel 8.

Johnson has interned at KING-TV, the NBC affiliate in Seattle, and is a reporter for Northwest Public Radio in addition to contributing to this year’s student news program, “UI Voices.” She also played on the UI women’s basketball team for four years.

The University of Idaho Design Team recently won three trophies and $5,750 cash at the eighth annual Environmental Design Team Contest in New Mexico.

The UI team won best overall presentation and first place and outstanding oral presentation for solving environmental problems.

Local students on the 10-member team included Stephany Burge, a chemical engineering major from Dover, and Marya George, a chemical engineering major from Moscow.

The competition involved designing solutions for real-world problems, including the remediation of contaminated sludge, mine tailings recovery and development of an in-tank real-time sensor.

Teams were judged on a formal report, a bench-scale demonstration of the technology developed, a poster presentation and an oral presentation.

The team received financial support from IMAGE, the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Moscow area businesses, Pacific Simulation and Terragraphics Environmental Engineering.
