Auditions Will Be Held For Summer Musical Productions

Vocalists and thespians take note: auditions for summer musicals will take place this week.

Spokane Civic Theatre will conduct tryouts for its musical production of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Cavanaughs Inn at the Park.

Stage director David Denman Smith and music director Jeff Batdorf need three men and three women for the stage version of the Saturday-morning cartoon series.

Auditioners are to prepare a song no longer than 90 seconds. An accompanist will be provided; no a capella will be allowed.

Auditions for Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma” will be Tuesday through Thursday at the Performing Arts Theater in Sandpoint, 506 Oak.

Auditions for adults will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Children, 12 and under, will try out at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Call-backs will be 7 p.m. Thursday.

Needed are leads for three women and four men, and a variety of secondary roles and dancers. All auditioners are asked to prepare a one-minute song; an accompanist will be provided. Musical stage experience is not necessary.

The July performances will be in Sandpoint’s Panida Theater, presented by the Performing Arts and Humanities, a nonprofit youth education organization.

To fuse glass

The Spokane Art School will offer an introductory workshop on glass fusing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday and next Sunday.

Glass artist Molly Valente will help participants create two pieces of fused glass jewelry and design a glass tile.

Summer arts camp

The Kirtland Cutter Theatre in Metaline Falls, Wash., will offer a series of arts camps June through October, covering fine arts, fiction and nonfiction writing, playwriting, performing arts and beading.

The workshops vary in length from two to five days and cost about $75 per day, which includes meals and lodging. For more information, call the theater at (509) 466-4108.

Spokane artists in Seattle

Several Spokane-area performers will take the stage at Seattle’s Northwest Folklife Festival, Friday through May 25.

Performers include the New Criterion Banjo Orchestra, the Celtic Nots, Starry Night with caller Juli Dickelman, the Erdely Ensemble, the Travelling Lundbergs, the Silver Spurs International Folk Dancers, and performers Arvid Lundin, Jack Lindberg and Rick Rubin.

The four-day festival will include a crafts marketplace, musical performances, art exhibits, ethnic food, music and dance workshops, children’s programs and a huge variety of concerts and dance performances.

Leroy Nielsen won the Black-and-White Print of the Year during the Spokane Camera Club’s 66th Salon Banquet.

Other trophy winners included Carol Wanamaker, who took the Black-and-White Creative Print of the Year; Alice Garland, Nature Slide of the Year and Slide of the Year; Florence Gunderson, Creature Slide of the Year; Ruth Slichter, Color Print of the Year; and Marilyn Bashore, Scenic Color Print of the Year.

Catalog grant won

Scott Patnode, curator and director of Gonzaga University’s Jundt Art Museum, has received a $10,000 grant from the American Express Foundation to catalog the university’s 3,500-piece art collection.

Patnode will visit museums and libraries in New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago and San Francisco to conduct extensive research to verify the authenticity, origin, value and history of each piece in GU’s collection.

Gonzaga has one of the Western United States’ premiere collections of Central and Eastern European prints.

When complete, Patnode’s computerized catalog will provide wide access to detailed information on the collection.

June deadline

The Eastern Washington Watercolor Society is accepting submissions for its XVI Juried Exhibition next October at the Allied Arts Gallery in Richland.

The exhibition is open to artists in the United States and Canada. Only unvarnished watermedia works on paper will be accepted.

Artists must submit color slides of their work before June 15. There is a fee of $10 per entry with a limit of two entries. Society members receive one free entry.
