Washington preps
Ferris High School athletes won two championships Tuesday and Gonzaga Prep took the other as the District 8-4A tennis tournament nearly wrapped up at Central Valley.
Ferris’ Megan McKitterick won the girls singles championship, topping Aaryn Volkmann of CV 7-5, 6-1. Nick Mays and James VanHess of Ferris won the boys doubles title, 6-2, 6-3 over brothers Karl and Peter Johnson of Lewis and Clark.
Alecia Nelson and Molly Maixner defeated Wendy Lin and Vanessa Waldref 6-1, 6-1 in an all-G-Prep girls doubles final.
The top four placers in each event qualified for the Region IV tournament, which begins Friday at Central Valley.
Also qualifying for regional by finishing in third and fourth places were: Philip Laubscher, Shadle Park, and Riggs Kubiak, G-Prep, boys singles; Lisa Van Gemert, G-Prep, and Jennifer Deitering, Mead, girls singles; and Audrey Routt and Ellen Kager, CV, and Lisa Trefts and Lindsay Scribner, Shadle, girls doubles.
The boys doubles consolation match will be played today. Boys singles were decided Monday, with Mead’s Ryan Moran claiming the title over Mt. Spokane’s Torrey Gambill.
Golf
Angela Gibler and Chris Barker led Ritzville to team titles at the District 7/9-1A/B tournament at two local courses.
Barker, a sophomore, shot an even-par 72 at Hangman Valley Golf Course to top three golfers by five strokes. Barker shot a 35 on the front nine.
Ritzville’s 173.5 points topped the nine-team field by 36 points. Tekoa-Oakesdale was second, led by Anthony Buergel, whose 77 tied Ritzville’s Josh Johnstone and Davenport’s Todd Strate for second.
District 7-3A
Catcher Ty Windhorst had an RBI double in the second inning and threw out a baserunner at second with one out in the seventh as East Valley (17-5) edged visiting West Valley 3-2 in the nightcap to advance to the Region IV tournament.
WV (8-16) had forced a second game by opening the day with an 8-5 win. EV, as Frontier League champ, was guaranteed a regional berth unless it lost twice.
Josh Bauch (5-2) earned the second-game win, striking out four in five innings. Chris Hilsabeck hit a two-run homer and scored four runs, and Joe Cahalan struck out seven as WV won the opener.
EV opens at region against Selah Saturday in Yakima. Lake Stevens and Moses Lake play the other game. Winners play for a spot in the state final four.
District 7-B
At Wilbur, Jamie Gwinn had a single, three doubles and four RBIs, as Almira/ Coulee-Hartline (13-8) defeated Odessa 15-10 to earn the No. 5 berth to region.
