Bond Would Add Space To Library

Residents who use the old, cramped East Bonner County Library will get some leg room if voters pass a $3.5 million bond levy.

“We have no space left for our collection. We have outgrown the building,” said library director Wayne Gunter.

Library trustees want voters to approve the bond for a new library nearly triple the size of the current facility. The money will also build a new Clark Fork library and pay to put a bookmobile on the road to service outlying towns.

The current library hardly has parking for patrons with a meager 12 spaces. The new Sandpoint facility will have room for school buses and 76 cars.

“We believe the proposal is a good one,” Gunter said. “We listened to people and made changes and so people would feel it was worthy of their vote.”

On a home with a $100,000 taxable value, the bond will cost $6.84 a year. The bond will be spread out over 20 years. That means anyone moving into the area will get taxed for the new facility. The old levy proposal only taxed residents currently living within the library district.
