Five years ago: Roman Catholic Cardinal Juan Jesus Posada Ocampo and six other people were killed at the Guadalajara, Mexico, airport in an alleged shootout involving drug gangs. The Senate confirmed Roberta Achtenberg, an acknowledged lesbian, to be a top federal housing official.

One year ago: The space shuttle Atlantis returned to Earth, bringing with it NASA astronaut Jerry Linenger, who had spent four months aboard the Russian Mir space station.
