Talents Needed For Several Area Events

If you have talent, Spokane is the place to be in the coming weeks.

Several area organizations are searching for talented folk to take part in a variety of public performances.

The Spokane Theatrical Company will hold auditions for “The Sound of Music.”

Children, 6 to 18 years old, will audition at 6:30 p.m. next Sunday at the Ballet Arts Academy, 416 W. Sprague. No preparation is necessary.

Auditions for adult chorus members will be at 7:30 p.m. June 2 at the same location. Adults are to prepare a song no longer than one minute long and not from “The Sound of Music.” An accompanist will be provided.

Production dates are July 17-19 and 23-26.

The Chase Youth Commission is looking for specialty acts for KidsWeek ‘98 Talent and Variety Show. Young people, no older than 18, can audition at 5 p.m. June 1 at Spokane Civic Theatre, 1020 N. Howard.

The Spokane Interstate Fair needs entertainers to perform during the fair, Sept. 11-20. Organizers want musicians, gymnasts, dancers, singers - even karate demonstrators - to apply.

Performances will be on the East Stage throughout the run of the fair.

For an application, call the fair office at 535-1766. Applications must be postmarked by June 12.

Art critic to deliver lecture

Art critic Dave Hickey will speak at the Cheney Cowles Museum’s next Wednesday night lecture. The lecture, titled “Pop Art and the Democracy of Objects,” will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Hickey is an associate professor of art criticism and theory at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and serves as contributing editor to Art Issues Magazine in Los Angeles and Parkett Magazine in Zurich.

The lecture is free and open to the public. The museum is located at 2316 W. First.

Coeur d’Alene artist honored

“Northwoods Creek,” an oil painting by Coeur d’Alene artist Marilyn Bowles, is part of the Oil Painters of America Exhibition through Friday at P&C Galleries in Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown.

In addition, three paintings by Bowles were selected for the recent Western Art Show and Auction in Ellensburg.
