Volunteers Aid Trails

Panhandle National

Forests One of the biggest single-day volunteer efforts ever organized to spiff up North Idaho trails is still looking for a few more helping hands on Saturday.

More than 125 people from businesses, service groups, church organizations and individuals have pledged their muscle power.

Volunteers can choose their favorite trail or they may want to work on a trail new to them, said Susan Matthews, Coeur d’Alene River district ranger.

“We’ve never had a work party this big,” said Andy Boggs, district trail coordinator. “If we have decent weather and workers bring friends, we could have 200 people involved.”

“The Forest Service simply doesn’t have the money or the manpower to keep up with maintaining all of our favorite trails,” said Jack O’Brien, a volunteer coordinator. “With one big effort, we can give a big boost to the season’s trail work.”

The Forest Service will be sending workers to 23 trails close to Coeur d’Alene and Wallace. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. as follows: Fernan office, 2502 Sherman Ave., in Coeur d’Alene.

Silverton office, next to the hospital in Silverton.
