Wwp Boosts Trout

Endangered species

Bull trout are getting additional protection from poachers and a few clueless anglers.

Washington Water Power Co., anglers and a fishing foundation are chipping in at total of $93,000 to beef up Idaho Fish and Game Department enforcement.

Bull trout are swimming on the verge of extinction in western river systems. Fishing for bull trout in Idaho has been illegal since 1996.

The impact of logging and road building on forests has been a major factor in the trout’s decline. But dams also have had an impact.

Perhaps because of requirements in relicensing Cabinet Gorge Dam on the Clark Fork River, WWP will spend $56,000 on bull trout enforcement. The Panhandle Chapter of Trout Unlimited will contribute $6,000, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is adding $31,000.

The money will be used to replace an aging Fish and Game Department enforcement boat and provide eight months salary for an officer dedicated to bull trout protection for a two-year period.
