Off-Roaders Angry Over Closed Trails

From Staff

More than 200 off-road motorists rallied at a closed dirt road in the Targhee National Forest Saturday to protest the closing of 385 miles of dirt roads and trails. The closure is designed to protect grizzly bear habitat.

Some protesters called the newly enforced closures an example of a tyrannical government agenda to cut off recreation access to public lands.

Targhee workers this year installed stronger gates, ripped surfaces and dug pits so motorists could not use roads in grizzly bear management units. More than 2,000 miles of roads and trails in the forest remain open.
