Dollar Falls Against Mark
The dollar fell against the mark Thursday as Germany’s central bank declined to cut key interest rates, a move that strengthened the mark against the dollar and other currencies. At the same time, the dollar gained against the Japanese yen.
Despite pressure from Germany’s new finance minister, Oskar Lafontaine, to lower rates, the Bundesbank announced no change Thursday in interest rates after its regular policy meeting. The news helped lift the mark against other currencies.
