ADAMS COUNTY

Othello

Local city government and the Adams County Commissioners are joining forces to develop Rodeo Lake Park. Rodeo Lake residents, long tired of fluctuating lake levels and drainage problems, are hoping to sell their land to these entities for the park. Landowners say they’d likely sell for the assessed valuation of their property. A plan for the park is being drawn up.

FERRY COUNTY

Area residents concerned about the future of agriculture in Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties are invited to a workshop Thursday. Held at the WSU Cooperative Extension Learning Center in Colville, the meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Those attending will talk about agriculture’s present status, maximizing opportunities and alternative crops.

GRANT COUNTY

Moses Lake

Basin folks will be making lots of apple pie and apple sauce as 44 bins of apples were donated to the Moses Lake Food Bank last week. Vince Byone Orchards of Quincy donated the Fuji and Red Delicious fruits. Food Bank Director Linda Finlay was overwhelmed by the size of the gift and has contacted neighboring food banks to share the wealth.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Creston

Trying to bring back a zest for sewing among area youth, the WSU Cooperative Extension is hosting a sewing overnighter. On the calendar for Tuesday, participants will create a quilt at a sewing pajama party held at the Creston School. Other upcoming sewing events include a pajama and pillowcase creating event and a holiday craft event. For information on dates and locations, call (509) 725-4171.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Metaline

A moving Veteran’s Day program is scheduled for Tuesday at the Selkirk High School Gym. Three students will perform the emotional “Ashokan Farewell,” with the concert band and choir adding patriotic music to the mix. Guest speaker will be retired Selkirk teacher and Marine vet Don Thomas. The observance gets under way at 9 a.m.

Army Pvt. Michael R. Neiswender, a graduate of Spokane’s Jantsch High School, recently received the Defense Meritorious Service Award. The award is presented to individuals for noncombat meritorious achievement of service.

STEVENS COUNTY

Chewelah

The local food bank will win no matter who loses the upcoming Apple Cup football game. To spark a giving frenzy, the local Women’s Club has put WSU Cougars and UW Huskies food barrels in the Safeway store. Fans of each team are invited to battle it out for donation supremacy.

Coordinators doubt this will have an effect on the game’s outcome, but hope true fans will count on karma and give generously.

WHITMAN COUNTY

Pullman

Kenneth Fridley, a member of WSU’s civil and environmental engineering faculty, has been named the Marian E. Smith Faculty Achievement Award winner for 1997-1998. The associate professor showed extraordinary commitment to students and adventuresome teaching methods, said those who nominated him. A popular adviser and community volunteer, Fridley was named the American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter faculty adviser at the 1997-1998 year as well.

BENEWAH COUNTY

St. Maries

Musicians from Spokane Symphony and Idaho/Washington Symphony will perform Nov. 21 at the Presbyterian Church. Tickets are $5 for adults, and free for children under 18. The concert, sponsored by the St. Maries Art Council, will begin at 7 p.m. For information, call (208) 245-3417.

The theme for the months of November through February at the Priest River Museum and Timber Education Center at the Keyser House will be “An Old Fashioned Christmas.” The exhibit will feature Christmas tree decorations, serving dishes, toys and other gifts from the 1895 era through the 1960s. TechHelp is presenting a workshop discussing the potential Y2K computer disruptions from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at the University of Idaho Research Park in Post Falls. TechHelp is a nonprofit organization that helps Idaho’s manufacturers be more competitive by providing training and technical assistance. Idaho State Veterans Service Officer Ken Pitcher will be at the VAMC mobile clinic Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW Post Home in Osburn.

He will assist veterans and their dependents in filing claims and he will provide information about the Department of Veterans Affairs and veterans benefits.

Libby

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has adopted a plan for punishing perpetrators and protecting domestic violence victims. “Ideal Response to Domestic Violence” was written by the county’s Domestic Violence Task Force. The plan lays out how legal, medical and counseling entities can best deal with punishing the aggressor and providing for the victim.
