* Don’t forget, Thursday is the Great American Smokeout. If you’re going to kick the tobacco habit for the day or are looking for ways to help a friend quit, visit www.cancer.org/smokeout/. The site, created for students, also includes information on the SmokeScream event that encourages schools to focus on tobacco education during the week and culminate with the student body letting out a collective scream on Thursday. Information is also available by calling the American Cancer Society at 326-1466.

* Win a $1,000 scholarship in the Kaplan Educational Centers and Newsweek “My Turn” essay contest. Submit a 500 to 1,000 world essay on a topic of your choice that shares an opinion, experience or personal feeling. * Registration is now open for the 1999 Fed Challenge, a national high school economics competition. Scholarships and grants are available to the winning team and their school. Teams of five students from high schools work, under the guidance of a teacher, to develop and recommend their own monetary policy for the United States. National winners receive $10,000 scholarships for each student on the team and a $50,000 grant for their school. Regional and individual scholarships are also awarded. * Spend nine days touring England with other youths from around the country. Enter the Young Columbus essay contest sponsored by the Newspapers in Education program of The Spokesman-Review and react magazine.
