Key Tronic Lands Tracking Contract

Key Tronic Corp. will announce today it has a new contract to make components for QUALCOMM, a digital communications provider.

A Spokane-based keyboard manufacturer since 1969, Key Tronic at one time led the Spokane Valley’s high-tech companies. The contract with San Diego-based QUALCOMM is another step in Key Tronic’s efforts to expand its business beyond keyboards and into the process of taking products from first idea to production.

Key Tronic will make a display Unit for QUALCOMM’s two-way mobile satellite communications and tracking system. The system is used by commercial trucking fleets and more than 800 transportation companies worldwide.

“The new QUALCOMM contract is further proof that our strategic direction as a company is right on target and being executed,” said Craig Gates, Key Tronic vice president of sales, engineering and marketing. The companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal.

Key Tronic, traded on Nasdaq, has about 2,400 employees, mostly in Mexico. In July the company moved another 200 jobs to Mexico, leaving about 400 employees at the company’s headquarters and plant in the Spokane Valley.
