WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

East Adams Rural Hospital Administrator Jim Parrish reports that while patient stays have decreased in length, the facility increased outpatient services. Although on track to perform 10,000 outpatient procedures, the facility needs longer stays to meet projected revenues. Parrish says finances in the past nine months are “disappointing,” and notes recent upheaval in Medicare coverage for seniors won’t help matters in rural areas.

Ferry County Republic

The future of the NBA is drilling and shooting in Republic. The “Tiger Cub” basketball league is in full swing with 90 boys and girls taking part. Students involved are in fourth, fifth and sixth grades. The league is sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club, with members of the Republic High School Tigers girls and boys teams helping out.

Grant County Grand Coulee

The local hospital and school are asking the Bonneville Power Administration for a little tax support. BPA, a federal agency, does not pay taxes or PILT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes) to Coulee Community Hospital or Grand Coulee Dam Schools for local lands. Hospital administrator Charlotte Lang recently asked BPA for help with funding. “The reason our tax revenues are so low is because over 80 percent of the geographic area we serve is either federal, state, county, city or tribal land,” she said.

Lincoln County Reardan

Students Jarda Sand and Chris Rodkey want everyone to know about Reardan High School. To prove that, they’ve designed the district’s Web site on the Internet. Named www.reardan.net, the site not only gives information about schedules, sports and highlights, but includes information on alumni and features on students and teachers. The duo is proud that 488 people accessed the site in October alone.

Pend Oreille County Sacheen Lake

The cleanup is ongoing, but members of the Northwoods Performing Arts choral group think the Circle Moon Theater, formerly the Circle Moon Cafe, will be ready for the holidays. The group, which recently purchased the building, is renovating it into a theater and performing arts center, complete with private balcony boxes. The group hopes to have a stage in place for its “Miracle on Bethlehem Street” show.

Spokane County Cheney

Marine Pfc. Kelly Roles recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. Roles is a 1995 graduate of North Central High School and joined the Marine Corps in May. He is the son of David and Marcia Roles of Cheney.

Stevens County Rice

Child Protective Services in Stevens County has agreed to be more careful when taking children into custody. Two busloads of scared children witnessed CPS workers picking up a 7-year-old classmate at a school bus stop Oct. 29. When the girl resisted, her schoolmates thought she was being kidnapped. A Stevens County sheriff’s deputy calmed the children. CPS sent a letter to the sheriff apologizing for not involving them in planning the incident.

Whitman County Garfield

Two students at Garfield-Palouse High School were recently honored as Students of the Quarter. Seniors Cherese Tuttle and Gavin Parberry were chosen from 150 students for their leadership, hard work, academic excellence and all-around great attitudes. Tuttle is the daughter of Steve and Gail Tuttle of Palouse and Parberry is the son of Gary and Rise Parberry of Farmington.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

The St. Maries Public Library is displaying Bob Marzulli’s collection of miniature buildings through Saturday. Marzulli displays a portion of his collection every year, this year featuring a shantytown made of bark and twig houses, and several ceramic houses.

Bonner County Priest River

Randee Pound received the Distinguished Service Award from the Bonner County 4-H Leaders Council at the recognition banquet Nov. 7 at the Priest River Community Congregational Church. Sharon Dalton received the Alumni Recognition Award. The Leaders Council officers were elected to serve for another year.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Boundary County Community Theater is looking for men and women to fill roles in the winter play. Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bonners Books in downtown Bonners Ferry. No experience is necessary. Information: (208) 267-5332.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The Coeur d’Alene Art Association presents a Festival of Art and Crafts through Thursday at 404 Sherman Ave. The festival will include a variety of paintings in prints, cards, ceramics, baskets and woodwork. For information, call Cora Kohler at (208) 667-6861.

Latah County Moscow

Moscow resident Witold Ferens won first place for an impromptu short speech and second place for a 5-7 minute humorous speech at the District 9 Fall Conference and Speech Contest in Spokane Oct. 24. Ferens is a member of the Moscow Toastmasters.

Shoshone County Wallace

Deadline for entries in the 1998 Wallace Yuletide Lighting gingerbread house competition is Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. The theme for this year’s celebration is “County Christmas.” All entries must be baked and 100 percent edible. Judging categories include classrooms, service clubs, neighbors and families. No entry fee for children grades five and younger, $2.50 fee for children sixth through 12th grade and $5 for adults. Lincoln County Troy
