ADAMS COUNTY Ritzville
A search is under way for nitrates in wells throughout the region. More than 700 wells in three counties, including Adams, are being tested for nitrates by the Columbia Basin Ground Water Management Area. Recent ground-water studies in Adams, Franklin and Grant Counties showed nitrates could be a problem. The tests are designed to fill gaps in ground-water data before solutions are planned.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
Hoping to raise money for Republic Community Radio, supporters of the radio station are holding a rummage sale and tie-dye seminar. The station, which has shut down temporarily due to the lack of a Federal Communications Commission license, needs $800 to pay outstanding bills. The benefit will be held Saturday in the Republic park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those wishing to tie-dye should bring a cotton shirt to the 10 a.m. workshop.
GRANT COUNTY Quincy
Folks pulling up to the polls here on Nov. 3 will decide on one local issue: busing. While the rest of the county receives bus service from the Grant County Transit Authority, Quincy has opted out. The transit agency says there is a demand for bus service to Quincy, but some local officials say rising taxes and damage to local businesses have them concerned. If approved, the sales tax in Quincy would rise 0.2 percent.
LINCOLN COUNTY Davenport
If residents of rural Lincoln County seem to have trouble finding their way home, that’s because all county addresses are being changed. Residents should be getting their new road names and address numbers by mid-October. Current rural residential addresses include a route and box number instead. Lincoln County’s enhanced 911 emergency service relies on the new addresses to respond to people in need.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
Citizens hoping to scare a bear cub away from traffic on Idaho state Highway 41 were successful last week. Although the bear didn’t go onto the road, it did climb a power pole. The cub kept Pend Oreille County Sheriff Doug Malby and Newport Police Chief Bill Clark occupied for two hours. State Fish and Wildlife Department agents eventually snared the animal for transport back into the wild.
SPOKANE COUNTY Cheney
The Cheney City Council has rejected a request by Mayor Amy Jo Sooy to suspend the residency requirement for a new city administrator. Sooy is believed to favor interim administrator Bob Hudson, who lives outside the city. Hudson, the parks director, took on the additional duties after city administrator Jim Reinbold left earlier this year.
STEVENS COUNTY Colville
Plans to remodel the deteriorating junior high school building will continue to be just that - plans. It was denied by only a single vote.
