Adams County Othello
Auditions continue today and Thursday for Othello Theater Guild’s production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.” Up to 50 parts are available; all involve singing and dance. This version is based on the Whitney Houston production of the fairy tale.
Ferry County Republic
Local train enthusiasts Carl and Tammy Stevens are the proud new owners of a big red caboose. The caboose, purchased from former state Rep. Steve Fuhrman, was a fixture along Highway 395 in Kettle Falls for many years. Prior to that, it was parked next to Spokane’s Flour Mill shopping mall. The Stevens plan to make the caboose into a vintage-style private parlor car for their guests.
Grant County Quincy
The folks at Hot Pursuit, Inc. invite the public to join the Central Washington Paintball League. Action starts Oct. 18 and runs through February, with the league championship scheduled for March. Cost per team is $250 and all competition takes place near the scenic Gorge at George Amphitheater. For more information, call (509)787-9256.
Lincoln County Wilbur
After playing afternoon games since football’s inception here, the Wilbur-Creston Wildcats hope to get stadium lights by Friday. Through donations and school funds, the towns were able to purchase lights and poles, but excavation costs held up the project. An anonymous person donated $4,000, which will be matched by his company, to fund the final phase. The Wildcats host the Liberty Lancers on Friday. A kickoff time has yet to be announced.
Pend Oreille County Ione
People needing transportation to the northern reaches of the county can look to the Selkirk Shuttle. The shuttle will be making nine extra trips during October. Selkirk Rangers football and volleyball fans can catch home games via shuttle. The shuttle will also provide rides to three concerts and lectures at the Cutter Theater.
Spokane County Cheney
The city hopes to eke another summer or two out of the local swimming pool. Built in 1963, the pool has severe pipe leakage under the bathhouse. Although some of the piping has been replaced, the portion under the solid concrete bathhouse slab could be another matter. The city is weighing how much money to pour into the old pool before asking citizens to ante up for a new one.
Stevens County Colville
While the Colville School District saw a decline in student numbers, surrounding districts report higher enrollment. “We are up 20 students from last year - 30 over what we budgeted for,” said Kettle Falls Superintendent Kurt Matter. In Northport, the district budgeted for 221 students, and 235 desks are filled. Orient’s K-8 program is holding steady at 107 kids.
Whitman County Pullman
The Pullman City Council will meet today with Washington State University administrators to discuss last spring’s riot and upcoming projects. The joint WSU-City of Pullman meeting will include discussions on preventing riots, legislative issues of mutual concern and the Livability Task Force’s efforts to make the region more attractive for students and business. WSU President Sam Smith will attend the meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
Hospice of Benewah County is sponsoring “Give the Bird” through Oct. 30. For a $5 donation, five plastic flamingos will be placed in the yard of a donor’s friend or neighbor. For another $5 donation, the birds will be removed. Insurance policies are also being sold at $5 to ensure the flamingos do not return. For information, call the Hospice office, 245-5734.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Selkirk-Priest Basin Association, Rock Creek Alliance and Idaho Conservation League present Pub Talk Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Red Martin Restaurant. The topic will be Lake Pend Oreille and the Rock Creek Mine. People with an expertise in a chosen field will be available during the discussion. Pub Talk is an opportunity to explore the issues of the day in a casual, fun and informative way.

Latah County Moscow
An American Federation of Teachers annual salary survey found UI full professors earn $17,454 less than the national average and $8,890 less than the average at peer institutions. It also showed that associate professor salaries in the humanities, social sciences and library sciences lagged as much as $20,000 below other disciplines.
“It is clear that going last year without a pay raise has impacted our salary positions considerably,” said AFT Local 3215 spokesperson Nick Gier in the report.
Gier said the administration deserves praise for making salaries a budget priority this year, but some faculty have reservations about the process the UI administration is using to find money for raises.
Shoshone County Kellogg
Statistics from the Idaho Department of Labor show Shoshone County’s unemployment rate for September dropped to 9.1 percent, down a full point from August. The September rate is up from 8.4 percent this time last year.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks has removed fishing limits on Little McGregor Lake, just north of McGregor Lake. Rehabilitation to remove stunted perch from Little McGregor Lake will begin Oct. 25, and the fishing limits are waived until that time.
