Bethany Schoeff Attends Music Program In Canada

Bethany Schoeff, an oboist from Cheney, was awarded an $800 scholarship to attend the Master Class Program at The Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada last summer.

Schoeff was the youngest of about 50 woodwind instrumentalists selected worldwide for the program.

She has also received her second annual $600 Shriners College Scholarship, an additional $4,150 scholarship and free tuition to the Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton, Fla., where she is majoring in oboe performance.

Schoeff is the daughter of Mary Ann Schoeff, Cheney.

Army Spc. Michael Charles Sebastian has graduated from basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo.

Sebastian served on active duty in the Navy for four years and served in the Navy Reserve for four years before re-enlisting in the Army.

His mother, Genevieve Sebastian, and his wife, Cherie, both live in Wellpinit, Wash.

Several area residents were awarded University of Washington Undergraduate Scholar awards. The recipients, who will be freshmen at the university this fall, were selected based upon high school academic achievement, leadership potential and civic involvement.

The students and their high schools are listed by their home towns: Spokane: Misty Bentz, Kimberly Klonoff and Meghan Pinch, all of Mead High School; and Scott Sheehan, East Valley High School.

Veradale: Anne Peterson, Central Valley High School.

Greenacres: Daryl Jump, Central Valley High School.

Nine Mile Falls: Luke Nervig, Lakeside High School.

Spokane resident Bob Elmore was honored with a special volunteer award for his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity.

Aside from being president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Spokane Chapter 32, Elmore has contributed to every aspect of building more than 10 new homes a year. He is a member of the building committee and is in charge of painting all of the Habitat homes.

Elmore was rewarded for giving his time and talents for the community and for being an outstanding citizen.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Carrie A. Stone was promoted to her present rank while serving as a food supply supervisor for the Seventh Services Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Abilene, Texas.

Stone, a 1989 graduate of West Valley High School, is the daughter of Phyllis and Harlan Nelson, Spokane.
