Obituaries

Robert McLean Spokane

Visitation for Robert E. McLean, 83, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Connell, Wash., Mr. McLean died Monday.

He graduated from Washington State University in 1936 and worked as an electrical engineer for many years.

Mr. McLean was a member of the York Masonic Lodge 234, the Eastern Star Victory Chapter 121, the Spokane Valley Baptist Church, the Rock Rollers, Boy Scouts and the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers.

He had been a resident of Spokane for 48 years.

Survivors include four daughters, Linda McLean of Spokane, Katherine McLean of Lynnwood, Wash., Nancy Corbin of Fernwood, Idaho, and Patricia Yates of Portland; a brother, William McLean of Othello, Wash.; two sisters, Ellouise Schaefer of Zillah, Wash., and Louise Taylor of Yakima; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Dale LaMon II Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Dale Thomas LaMon II, 43, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Newport Assembly of God Church. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. LaMon, who was born in Burlington, Vt., died Tuesday.

He moved to the Pacific Northwest in the mid-1980s and worked in the construction industry.

Mr. LaMon was attending his second year at the Spokane Community College satellite in Newport.

He was a member of the Newport Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Brianne and Laurissa LaMon of Spirit Lake, Idaho; his mother and stepfather, Billie and Richard Geaudreau of Spirit Lake; a brother, John LaMon of Newport; three stepsisters, Celeste Reed of Spokane, Angela Hughes of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Tamarra Jenkins of Rock Springs, Wyo.; two stepbrothers, Michael Geaudreau of Spokane and Richard Geaudreau of Blanchard, Idaho; a half-brother, Steven, and four half-sisters, Nadine, April, Joyce and Deanna, all of California.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Newport Assembly of God Church or the Lions Club.

Elizabeth Spencer Spokane

Service for Elizabeth A. Spencer, 94, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Spencer, who was born in Sandpoint, died Tuesday.

She lived in Sandpoint and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1942. She worked in the fashion department at Montgomery Ward for 25 years.

Mrs. Spencer moved to Spokane 18 months ago, and was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Coeur d’Alene, the Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Eagles Aerie and was a charter member of the Coeur d’Alene Lady Elks.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Arbie Campbell in 1963 and Robert Spencer in 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Chaffins of Spokane and Lois Doyle of Moscow, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Joan Cogswell of Sandpoint; a sister, Iris Schedler of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Arne Savage of Spokane; two grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dwane Frazier Spokane

Graveside service for Dwane Frazier, 67, will be at 3 p.m. today at Pines Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Frazier, who died Tuesday, was born in Orondo, Wash.

He retired from Burlington Northern Railroad as an engineer.

Mr. Frazier was a 45-year Spokane resident.

Survivors include his companion, Ruby Trindle; two sons, John and Robert Frazier; and a sister, June Streeter.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. George’s School Scholarship Fund.

Floyd Gepford Spokane

Memorial service for Floyd C. Gepford, 77, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Mr. Gepford, who was born in Wolsey, S.D., died Sept. 24.

He was self-employed in the landscaping and gardening business and had been a resident of Spokane for 30 years.

He is survived by a niece, Jean Bryant of Marysville, Wash.

James Carson, M.D. Spokane

Vigil service for James A. Carson, M.D., 51, is planned for 6:30 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Dr. Carson, who died Monday, was born in St. Louis.

He was raised in California, where he graduated from college and medical school.

Dr. Carson completed his surgical residency at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., and his pediatric surgery residency at Boston Children’s Hospital and Oklahoma Children’s Hospital.

He was assistant professor of surgery in Oklahoma until moving to Spokane in 1983, joining Dr. Chad Baxter in private practice. He was also an associate clinical professor of surgery at the University of Washington.

Dr. Carson was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the American Pediatric Surgical Association and the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons.

Survivors include his wife of five years, Sharon; two stepsons, Tony Nielsen of Port Angeles, Wash., and Shawn Nielsen of Seattle; a stepdaughter, Traci Cromwell of Huntington Beach, Calif.; his mother, Antionette Carson of Hemlock, N.Y.; a brother, John Carson of Pasadena, Calif.; and a sister, Mary Davenport of Hemlock.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Miracle Network.

Joe Chan Spokane

Visitation for Joe Chan, 68, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for noon Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Chan, who was born in Canton, China, died Monday.

He was a restaurant owner and a thoroughbred horse racer.

Mr. Chan had lived in Spokane for 45 years.

Survivors include his wife Yvonne; his mother, Huie Chan of Spokane; two daughters, Namva and Namcy Chan, and two sons, Namgo and Namcheon Chan, all of Spokane; a brother, Ting Chin of Fullerton, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Lois Cedar Spokane

Graveside service for Lois M. Cedar, 75, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Thornton (Wash.) Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Cedar, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

She was raised in Thornton, Wash., and moved to Spokane 57 years ago after her marriage to Everett Nelson. They were later divorced.

Ms. Cedar was a homemaker and had lived at the Shellar Adult Family Home since Feb. 1998.

She was preceded in death by her companion, Lawrence Schmidt.

Survivors include a daughter, Anita Howard; and a son, Warren Nelson of Moscow, Idaho.

Arthur Melcher Odessa, Wash.

Funeral for Arthur “Art” Melcher, 80, was Wednesday at Odessa Christ Lutheran Church.

Mr. Melcher, who was born in Schrag, Wash., died Saturday.

He served in the Army during World War II and was a foreman for U and I Sugar for many years.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa.

Survivors include his wife Ednes; three daughters, Marcia Williams of Deer Park, Mary Lee King of Odessa and Betty Jo Bills of Pocatello, Idaho; a sister, Lydia Clemenson of Spokane; four stepchildren, 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa.

Marian John Spokane

Funeral Mass for Marian A. John, 82, will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Trentwood.

Mrs. John, who was born in Hazen, N.D., died Tuesday.

She married Rudy John in 1940 and they moved to Spokane in 1941.

Mrs. John was a homemaker and was active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Donna Holbrook of Spokane and Patricia Jorgensen of Seattle; two sons, Ron and Tom John, both of Spokane; three brothers; two sisters; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Michael Whitney Inchelium, Wash.

Funeral for Michael Francis Whitney, 47, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Inchelium Community Center. Graveside service will follow at Hall Creek Cemetery in Inchelium. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Whitney, who was born in Inchelium, died Sunday.

He graduated from Inchelium High School in 1970, and in 1971 married Sandra Banks.

Mr. Whitney moved to Spokane where he worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad until returning to Inchelium in 1983.

He worked for the Colville Tribal Police Department from 1986 until 1997. He was serving as acting police chief when he left the department.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Josh and Richard Whitney at home; a sister, Sharyl Pakootas, a brother, Floyd Pakootas, and his stepfather, Ray Pakootas, all of Inchelium.
