Sandpoint Prevails In Crossover

Sandpoint wrested the crown away from the Greater Spokane League at Saturday’s fifth Crossover Classic high school volleyball tournament in Spokane.

The champion Bulldogs completed their march through the 44-team tourney with a 15-6, 15-7 victory over Puyallup at North Central High.

Both teams made huge jumps from their 1997 Crossover appearances, when Sandpoint placed 16th and Puyallup 23rd.

Two-time defending tourney champion Ferris, of the GSL, didn’t advance to the final-eight round at NC despite finishing 3-0 during its morning pool. The tourney had 11 pools, at five sites, and overall points determined second-round assignments.

Mead defeated Rogers 15-7 in an all-GSL match for third and fourth places. Prairie defeated Fife, the 1995 Crossover champion, for fifth and sixth.

Auburn, last year’s Washington State 4A runner-up to Ferris, defeated Pasco for seventh place.

The tourney ran nearly 2 hours behind schedule. Many teams waited at length for their second-round assignments.

Ferris wound up 10th, one spot behind Greater Spokane League rival Shadle Park.

Women’s soccer

Freshman forward Ginger Sellick scored on an unassisted breakaway in the ninth minute Sunday, giving Boise State University (5-6-1) a 1-0 victory over Idaho (3-9-1, 0-5) in a Big West Conference match at Moscow, Idaho.

The host Vandals dominated play, launching 20 shots to seven for the Broncos. However, they bounced several shots off the goal and had an apparent score waived off late in the game.

Idaho suffered its seventh consecutive shutout defeat.

Jacqui Little, Kylie Bivens and Megan Horvath each scored two goals at sunny Santa Clara, Calif., where No. 3 Santa Clara bombarded Gonzaga 10-0 in a West Coast Conference game.

Sophomore forward Tracey Milburn scored two goals and freshman midfielder Breana Boling added a third as 18th-ranked UCLA (12-1-1 overall, 2-0-0 Pacific-10) rolled to a 3-0 victory over Washington State (3-7-2, 1-1-0 at Pullman.

Suzanne Boyce, from Spokane’s University High, rebounded her own shot near the eight-minute mark in the second overtime, giving Whitworth (5-7, 4-5 Northwest Conference) a 1-0 victory over Pacific Lutheran (8-6-1, 6-5) at Whitworth.

Men’s soccer

Pacific Lutheran (8-3-1, 7-3-1) scored twice within a minute early in the second half and the visiting Lutes went on to defeat Whitworth (6-6, 4-6) 2-1 in a Northwest Conference match.
