Guild, Magazines Helpful To Knitters
For readers who knit, here are some organizations and newsletter resources.
I believe that guilds and groups serve special interests very well. The Internet is wonderful, but nothing beats the human contact and sharing of ideas among people who gather together once a month or so. The groups can also provide entertaining and educational programs for members, as well as hands-on workshops.
The Knitting Guild of America has more than 10,000 members nationally. Membership ($23 a year) includes a quarterly magazine called Cast On. The organization offers correspondence courses and hosts conferences throughout the country. Call 1-800-274-6034, 5:30 a.m.2 p.m. PDT weekdays.
Knitting enthusiasts also have favorite publications, and here are a few of those, all but the last available at most newsstands and yarn shops: Family Circle Knits: quarterly, $4.95 an issue. Aimed at beginners and intermediate knitters.
Vogue Knitting: quarterly, $4.95 an issue or $15.50 a year. Stylish designs for various skill levels, with stitch information and yarn guide. Published by Butterick Co.
Knitters Magazine: quarterly, $4.95 an issue. For all skill levels, for hand and machine.
Interweave Knits: quarterly, $5.95 an issue. Offers tips and projects for more experienced or sophisticated knitters. Published by Interweave Press, which also publishes two newsletters each year. To subscribe, call 1-800-645-3675, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PDT weekdays.
Look for the magazines at your local yarn shop.
