A winter backcountry safety seminar for skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers and others who venture away from civilization during winter is scheduled for Thursday at Mountain Gear in Spokane.
The free three-hour session, which begins at 6 a.m., will cover avalanche danger, hypothermia and other topics.
“This will be a taste of the different things you need to know to be safe in the backcountry,” said Jim Ledford, Mountain Gear spokesman.
Seminar presenters include Paul Green, Eastern Washington University recreation professor, Chic Burge of the Spokane Mountaineers and representatives from the Panhandle National Forests.
The seminar is similar to a popular presentation developed in Coeur d’Alene several years ago following an increase with backcountry incidents involving snowmobilers, skiers and snowboarders.
