* Chance for cash. This week has been dubbed “Teen Read Week” by the American Library Association and Young Adult Library Services Association. They are trying to promote the message, “Read for the Fun of It.”
As part of the promotion for the week, libraries will award $1,000 in prizes to teens for the best advertising campaigns to turn their peers onto reading. To enter, send art and messages for posters, radio, TV and magazine advertisements and other promotional items. The ideas for advertisements must come from students ages 12-18. For more information, call your local library or visit www.ala.org/teenread/contest.html on the Internet.
* Speak your mind. We are looking for representatives from several area schools to serve on the Our Generation Advisory Board. The board meets every other month to critique the Our Generation section, debate an editorial, brainstorm ideas and talk about ways to improve the section. At the next meeting, Nov. 30, the students will meet with top editors from the paper to talk about what they’d like to see in the rest of the paper as well. Advisory Board members do not write for Our Generation, but do gather quotes to accompany stories or stand alone questions, and are considering some public service projects.
To find out if there are still spots open for students from your school and how to apply, call Tina at 459-5485.
