ADAMS COUNTY Ralston

Adams County middle-schoolers will get a chance to experience “Halloween in the tropics” at a party on Saturday. Called a “Ralston Rendezvous” by the host Adams County Cooperative Extension office, the event will include dancing, karaoke and food for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Buses will transport kids from Lind, Ritzville and Washtucna to Ralston and back.

FERRY COUNTY Republic

Senior citizens are in need of a helping hand now and then, especially in the winter, says Republic’s Volunteer Chore Service. Volunteers are needed to help senior citizens run errands and do light housekeeping or yardwork. The chore service will pay mileage. Call (509) 684-5671.

GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake

Officials at Lakeview Terrace Elementary School took a telephone threat to “shoot somebody” seriously last week, locking down the school. The caller, possibly a young boy, hung up without saying who would be shot. The district went on alert - increasing police patrols on the campus, locking down classrooms and limiting recess time. The incident is under investigation.

LINCOLN COUNTY Wilbur

If you’re making zucchini bread, local gardener Bud Duncan is the man to know. Duncan recently took a 20-pound zucchini into the Wilbur Register newspaper office for a photograph. The Register’s staffers - the new owners of the vegetable - still are wondering just how many loaves they’ll be able to bake.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport

Facing dwindling enrollment and more budget cuts, the Newport School District is eyeing its next levy request. On the calendar for February, the levy will address maintenance and operations issues. Money is needed not only to update facilities but also to keep technology on pace despite recent financial woes.

SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane

Stacy Clinesmith is teaching at flight school - Michael Jordan’s Flight School. The starting point guard for the University of California at Santa Barbara women’s basketball team, Clinesmith was chosen by Jordan as a staff member for his basketball camp. The Chicago Bulls basketball player holds two sessions of his basketball camp in Santa Barbara, where he lectures and demonstrates shooting for 1-1/2 hours daily, then golfs as staff members instruct campers. Clinesmith is a 1996 graduate of Mead High School.

STEVENS COUNTY Colville

While most youngsters out and about on Saturday will be asking for candy, a group of local teens will be asking for your loose change. The Colville High School Key Club, a youth version of Kiwanis, will be ringing doorbells to help fight iodine deficiency disorders. Millions of children are iodine-deficient - a problem that targets the brain and nervous system.

WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman

Comedians Ross Shafer and George Miller will highlight special events Saturday during Dad’s Weekend on the Washington State University campus. Their 8 p.m. performance is set for Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum. BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

The St. Maries community Halloween costume party and dance will be Friday at the Eagles Lodge, 707 Main. Dinner will be served from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with costume judging at 7:30 p.m. The dance will follow from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Costumes will be judged in two divisions: 14 to 17 years old and age 18 and older. Cost will be $2 per person with all proceeds to be donated to the St. Maries High School band and choir.

The Bonner County clerk’s office will test the election night vote-tallying system on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Courtroom No. 4 of the Bonner County Courthouse.

KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene

Staff members of the Idaho Commission on the Arts will be in Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 521 Lakeside. They will discuss the Idaho Arts Storefronts program, as well as arts grants, awards and services related to North Idaho. LATAH COUNTY Moscow

An effort to improve the southeast entrance to the University of Idaho campus is under way near Sweet Avenue. The joint university-community project is aimed at restoring and improving Paradise Creek, which flows through an undeveloped area on the eastern edge of campus. Landscaping, a bike path and campus signs are planned. Campus parking, new buildings and other developments also are under discussion.

SHOSHONE COUNTY Silver Valley

Shoshone County fire departments are offering chimney rods and brushes to homeowners to clean their chimneys. Homeowners should clean the chimneys before lighting their fireplace or wood stove for the first time this season.

LINCOLN COUNTY Troy

Work on Troy’s sewage treatment plant is winding down with less than two months remaining on the construction contract. Phase two of the project, which will connect city businesses and homes south of Callahan Creek to the sewage treatment system, is under way. The major part of the project is to be completed by Dec. 11.
