Alabama 38, Brigham Young 31: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Shaun Alexander scored two of his school-record five touchdowns in the fourth quarter Saturday night and the Crimson Tide held off the Cougars in a season opener.

Kentucky 68, Louisville 34: At Louisville, Ky., Tim Couch opened his Heisman Trophy campaign with 498 passing yards and seven touchdowns as the Wildcats (1-0) ruined the Cardinals’ debut of former Idaho coach John L. Smith.

Mississippi St. 42, Vanderbilt 0: At Starkville, Miss., James Johnson rushed for 111 yards - almost outgaining Vanderbilt’s new-look offense - as the Bulldogs rolled over the Commodores in a season and SEC opener.

Mississippi 30, Memphis 10: At Oxford, Miss., Romaro Miller passed for 332 yards and two touchdowns, leading Mississippi to victory in the season opener for both teams.

South Carolina 38, Ball St. 20: At Columbia, S.C., Anthony Wright came back from reconstructive knee surgery to throw for three TDs and 180 yards and lead the Gamecocks (1-0) past the Cardinals (0-1).

Duke 24, W. Carolina 10: At Durham, N.C., Spencer Romine threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead the Blue Devils (1-0) past the Catamounts (0-1).

Boston College 41, Georgia Tech 31: At Atlanta, Scott Mutryn ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and Mike Cloud ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Eagles’ (1-0) upset of the Yellow Jackets (0-1).

Maryland 23, James Madison 15: At College Park, Md., Lynde Washington returned an interception 32 yards for a score and the Terrapins (1-0) stopped the Dukes (0-1).

Clemson 33, Furman 0: At Clemson, S.C., Javis Austin and Terry Witherspoon had scoring runs and the Tigers (1-0) held the Paladins (0-1) without a touchdown for the eighth consecutive meeting.

Miami 66, East Tennessee St. 17: At Miami, James Jackson ran for two second-quarter touchdowns and Nate Brooks returned a blocked punt 12 yards for another score as the Hurricanes (1-0) posted the third-best point total in school history in thumping the I-AA Buccaneers (0-1).

Virginia Tech 38, East Carolina 3: At Blacksburg, Va., Al Clark passed for 106 yards and two touchdowns and the Hokies’ (1-0) defense kept the Pirates (0-1) out of the end zone despite allowing 303 yards.

Pittsburgh 48, Villanova 41: At Pittsburgh, Matt Lytle threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns as Pittsburgh defeated the Division I-AA Wildcats in a season opener.

Rutgers 7, Richmond 6: At Piscataway, N.J., Dennis Thomas ran 26 yards for the only touchdown and the Scarlet Knights (1-0) ended the third-longest losing streak in majorcollege football by defeating the I-AA Spiders (0-1).

Texas 66, New Mexico St. 36: At Austin, Texas, Ricky Williams ran for 215 yards on 36 carries and scored a school-record six touchdowns as Mack Brown won his debut as coach of the Longhorns by defeating the Aggies (0-1).

Texas Tech 35, Texas-El Paso 3: At Lubbock, Texas, Ricky Williams ran for a career-high 248 yards, leading the Red Raiders over the Miners in a season opener.

Rice 23, Southern Methodist 17 (OT): In a season and WAC opener at Houston, Clint Leschber scored on a 2-yard touchdown dive in overtime as the Owls rallied to win after fumbling twice inside the Mustangs’ 10.

Tulsa 49, Southwest Missouri St. 14: At Tulsa, Okla., Wes Caswell returned from last year’s knee injury to catch three touchdown passes as the Golden Hurricane rolled over the Division I-AA Bears in a season opener.

Arkansas 38, SW Louisiana 17: At Fayetteville, Ark., Clint Stoerner threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Lucas early in the third quarter and Chrys Chukwuma went 62 yards for a TD moments later as the Razorbacks began the Houston Nutt era with a win over the Cajuns (0-1).

Oklahoma St. 38, Kansas 28: At Lawrence, Kan., Troy West made two interceptions, running one back for a touchdown, and Tony Lindsey ran for two scores as the Cowboys pulled away in the closing minutes to defeat the Jayhawks in a season and Big 12 conference opener.

Missouri 37, Bowling Green 0: At Columbia, Mo., quarterback Corby Jones ran for two touchdowns and threw for one as the Tigers, scoring on their first five possessions, defeated the Falcons in a season opener.

TCU 31, Iowa St. 21: At Ames, Iowa, Basil Mitchell rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns as the Horned Frogs (1-0) beat the Cyclones (0-1).

Iowa 38, Central Michigan 0: At Iowa City, Iowa, Kahlil Hill scored on a 62-yard punt return and an 88-yard kickoff return and Ladell Betts ran for two scores as the Hawkeyes (1-0) defeated the Chippewas (0-1).

Minnesota 17, Arkansas St. 14: At Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers (1-0) won when Adam Bailey kicked a 17-yard field goal on the last play to turn back the 27-point underdog Indians (0-1).

Northwestern 41, UNLV 7: At Evanston, Ill., Dewayne Bates caught nine passes for 156 yards to inspire the Wildcats’ (1-0) victory over the Rebels (0-1).

Tulane 52, Cincinnati 34: At Cincinnati, P.J. Franklin caught 11 passes for 172 yards and two TDs as the Green Wave beat the Bearcats in a season and C-USA opener.

Marshall 27, Akron 16: At Akron, Ohio, Doug Chapman scored three touchdowns, including two in the final 4:39, as the Thundering Herd defeated the Zips in a season and MidAmerican Conference opener. Also in the MAC, Toledo defeated Temple 24-12, making Gary Pinkel (51-26-3) the winningest coach in Rockets history.

West

Air Force 42, Wake Forest 0: At Air Force Academy, Colo., Qualario Brown ran for a career-high 166 yards and the Falcons (1-0), third nationally in scoring defense last year (12.4 ppg), shut down the Demon Deacons (0-1).
