New Idaho Soccer Program Gets 1St Win

Andrea Lee’s straight-on goal from 12 feet gave Idaho (1-1) a 1-0 soccer win over Eastern Washington (0-2) in the Governor’s Cup at Boise on Saturday.

At Idaho, soccer is a first-year program.

Lee dribbled by Eagles defenders 19 minutes into the second half. Goalkeeper Tricia Haynes, filling in for injured Sacha Martin, had the shutout.

Gonzaga Prep graduate Angela Harrison played goalkeeper in the first half, and Tara Koleski had one goal and an assist as seventh-ranked Portland opened its women’s soccer season with a 3-0 West Coast Conference victory at Gonzaga University.

Michelle French added two assists for the Pilots, who are 6-0 against the Bulldogs in WCC play since 1993.

Harrison deflected an Erin Fitzpatrick shot over the crossbar at the 35-minute mark.

The Zags (0-2, 0-1) had a scoring chance in the second half, but Cheryl Loveless stopped Layla Moshrefi’s breakaway.

Western Oregon defeated Whitworth 2-1 at the Evergreen State College tournament in Olympia despite being outshot 11-1 in the second half.

Heidi Bohnett scored for the Pirates at 70 minutes. Whitworth came close on another second-half goal, but the referee ruled that the ball didn’t cross the scoring line.

Men’s soccer

Goalkeepers Dave Hume and Doug Lupton combined for a shutout as Whitworth opened its season with a 7-0 win over Northwest College at the Evergreen State College tournament in Olympia.

Seven different players scored for the Pirates, who led 2-0 after 10 minutes.

Cross Country

Washington State B won both Division I team races and Community Colleges of Spokane swept the Division II races at Whitworth College’s Spokane Harrier Classic.

Freshmen Oscar Franco-Parra and Mark Wicklander finished 1-2 to lead WSU’s men. Franco-Parra completed the 6-kilometer race in 21 minutes and 21 seconds, 17 seconds faster than Wicklander. Idaho’s Ryan Jensen placed third at 21:46.

WSU’s women edged Idaho 27-31. Idaho’s Jaime Stone, of Deer Park, won the 4K race in 15:57 to defeat WSU freshman April Gagner by 7 seconds.

James Berry (21:45), Brandon Hauver (22:20) and Jim Reed (22:24) finished 1-2-3 for CCS in Division II men’s results. Nik Galloway placed fourth in 22:37 to lead North Idaho College to second place.

Winner Devin Huck (15:55) and runner-up Colleen Huck (15:58) led the champion CCS women. NIC’s Teresa Viebrock took sixth in 17:02.
