New Logo Created For Arts District

Nina Culver Correspondent

A new logo has been designed for the Davenport Arts District to fit its image of beautification and street-enhancement projects, said Kim Pearman-Gillman, president.

Katrini Schultz, graphic designer, created a label that’s “classical and subtly beautiful,” Pearman-Gillman said.

“The colors of eggplant and gold create a strong image for the Arts District and will help define the area,” she said.

The group’s board of directors also selected the artwork of Charles Palmer for the label of “Arts District Blend” of coffee produced by Craven’s Coffee. One dollar from each package of coffee sold will be donated to the Davenport Arts District.

Palmer’s steaming cup of coffee sitting on a table with an artist’s paint tube and brush nearby will also be featured on commemorative T-shirts to help raise funds to help pay for such enhancements as tree planters, signs, banners and flowers.

Watercolor competition

The Spokane Watercolor Society is soliciting entries for its third annual juried watermedia competition Oct. 5-31 at the Douglas Gallery, 120 N. Wall. Eligible artists must be over the age of 18 and live within 200 miles of Spokane.

All works must be original watermedia, and white or off-white matting is required. Entries must be hand delivered to Douglas Gallery between 9 and 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. The entry fee is $10 for the first painting, $15 for the second, with a limit of two entries per artist. For more information, call Diane Culley at 747-6246.

New symphony musician

The Spokane Symphony has hired Eugene Mondie of Charleston, S.C., as its new principal clarinetist.

Mondie spent three seasons with the Charleston Symphony and served as principal clarinet with the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Japan’s only chamber orchestra.

Mondie, who studied at DePaul University, was selected from a national pool of applicants.

His first performance with the Spokane Symphony will be at the season’s opening night concert at 8 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Opera House.
