Army Reserve Honors Area Students

U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Awards were granted to 16 area students. The awards are to recognize top high school scholars and athletes across the nation.

The students and their high school are:

Paul Malisani and Nina Boline, Cheney; Timothy Ike and Janelle Morrisette, Ferris; and Adam Love and Jamie Borgan, Lewis and Clark.

Garrett Husky and Suzanne Schreck, Davenport; Brandon Moore and Melissa Page, Medical Lake; Rhett Soliday and Gina Cassaro, Reardan; Jacob Peterson and Julie Suchanek, Rosalia; and Jason Carroll and Kristy Engles, Sprague.

Three Spokane-area residents recently completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas:

Jason Atkins, a 1995 graduate of Ferris High School, is the son of Debbie and James Whitsett, Spokane.

Christopher A. Lanning, a 1997 graduate of St. Maries High School, is the son of Annette Chapman, Newman Lake, and Clifford L. Lanning, St. Maries.

Eric Salisbury, a 1994 graduate of North Central High School, is the son of Christine and Dennis Salisbury, Spokane.

Mark Howlett, a May graduate of Washington State University, received a $200 Large Animal Surgery Award and a $375 Pogo Scholarship for small animal surgery from the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Howlett, a 1992 graduate of Shadle Park High School, is the son of John and Kathleen Howlett, Spokane.

Brian Guastella, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Guastella, Spokane, graduated last spring with a degree in economics from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.

Nina Roecks, Spokane, graduated cum laude with a degree in anthropology and psychology from Rockford (Ill.) College in May.

Anthony Carter, a junior at Gonzaga University, received the Best Biology Poster Presentation award at the annual Northwest Undergraduate Natural Sciences Conference at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.

Carter collected the research information last year during a National Science Foundation project to study topics in evolution.
