ADAMS COUNTY Othello
It’s Sacramento or bust for the Bethel Spanish Assembly of God choir. Raising hopes, and money, to perform at the Pacific Latin American District Council of the Assemblies of God, the choir is praying for dollars. The group will hit the road Wednesday in its well-known “Praise the Lord” bus. Joe Tovar and Ana Garza will be special soloists at the event, where the local choir will perform at least three songs each night.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
A Wilbur man is glad to be alive after the logging truck he was driving rolled into the San Poil River recently. Mervyn Seylor, 57, was northbound toward Republic with a load of logs when he lost control of his truck. The vehicle landed on its top and Seylor was submerged. Still trapped by the steering wheel, Seylor was able to get his head above water with the help of passing motorists, who held him up until help arrived. Seylor was treated for scrapes and bruises at Ferry County Memorial Hospital.
GRANT COUNTY Quincy
A Quincy man was surprised by a semi-automatic gun toting burglar in his home Aug. 27. Glenn Forney, 56, was duct-taped to a chair with a pillow case over his head as his camouflage-attired assailant robbed his home of valuables at approximately 5 p.m. The robber, who also took Forney’s white Mazda pickup, called Forney at 5:40 p.m. to see if he was all right. He called again at 8:05 p.m. to see if his victim had waited two hours before calling the police, as he had been instructed. Those with information are asked to call the Grant County Sheriff at (800) 572-0119.
LINCOLN COUNTY Wilbur
With the football season upon them, the Wilbur-Creston Wildcats may find themselves in the dark. Although the $40,000 stadium lights have been paid for, the two school districts have found themselves in need of an extra $4,000 for excavation. To erect the lights, pole holes and electrical wire trenches need to be dug through a rocky bed. The Wildcats, who have always played afternoon football games, are hoping the money materializes before their first home outing, the homecoming game against the Sprague-Harrington Falcons on Sept. 25.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
In an effort to keep the lines of communication open among its allies, the United States Navy recently held cooperative warfare exercises. Taking part was Scott H. Kraft of Newport. Kraft, the 26-year-old son of Charles and Jeane Frandrup of Newport, joined naval bomb disposal experts from the Australia and Singapore navies in the exercises. Kraft is a member of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit No. 5 based in Guam.
SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane Valley
High school students at East Valley’s Extension School want to build a skate park and they’ve found a seemingly unusual ally: the executive director of the Spokane Valley Chamber. “Anytime our youth get excited about building something we should do everything we can to encourage them,” wrote Loren Mitchell in the chamber’s recent newsletter.
STEVENS COUNTY Fruitland
A wide variety of musicians and an appreciative audience are expected at Sun West Farms BlueGrass Festival. Running Tuesday through Sunday, the event is a Woodstock-esque concert held in a scenic meadow. All are invited to bring campers and coolers to Sun West Farms, 35 miles north of Davenport on Highway 25 (or six miles south of Fruitland on Enterprise Road). BONNER COUNTY Priest River
The Priest River Council has scheduled a hearing on its proposed budget for fiscal year 1998-99 Tuesday during the regular meeting beginning at 7 p.m. The meeting was changed to Tuesday due to the Labor Day holiday.
BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries
The St. Maries police department will move its offices to the basement of City Hall this month. The area, which used to be two vehicle bays of the city shop, is being remodeled by city workers. The renovation of the basement will cost about $2,000.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has used public comments gathered during the “Stand Down to Listen” campaign to draft four funding options. About $6.5 million is needed to maintain current programs and staffing levels. Comments were gained from visitors to the Boundary, Bonner and Kootenai county fairs, along with questionnaires received by the department.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Post Falls
The Post Falls High School classes of 1934 to 1939 will hold class reunions Friday and Saturday. The reunion will begin Friday with a buffet dinner at Oddfellows Hall and end with a banquet at Cavanaughs Templin’s Resort Saturday evening.
LATAH COUNTY Moscow
Moscow residents are invited to “Whack the Wall” Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the new home of the Moscow Food Co-op, 221 E. Third St. The co-op will be moving to that location after the store is remodeled. An interior wall must be demolished as part of the renovations and the co-op is selling “whacks” on the wall to help pay expenses. For a $5 donation, wall-whackers will receive a certificate and the use of hard hat, goggles and choice of several sledgehammers. Children under 12 will be allowed a full minute of whacking and those over 12 will be allowed two whacks.
SHOSHONE COUNTY Kellogg
The First Security Summer Concert Series at Silver Mountain brought in a record number of 13,000 visitors this year. Five of the seven shows sold out this year, with 450 more people at each concert compared with last year.
