UI Wins Governor’S Cup

The Idaho Vandals women’s soccer team won the first Governor’s Cup on Monday in Boise, defeating the Idaho State Bengals 2-1 in sudden death overtime.

Megan Cummings booted the game-winning goal from 10 yards out on an assist from Polley McCune. McCune, a freshman forward and tourney MVP, scored the first goal of the match in the 51st minute.

Also, Boise State edged Eastern Washington 1-0.

Jenny Withers, Sara Streufert and Katie Carpenter each scored goals to give Gonzaga (1-2) a 3-0 win over visiting Northwest Nazarene (0-2-1).

College men’s soccer

Jason Kuska and Brett Fink each scored first-half goals to spark Gonzaga (1-2) to a 3-1 victory over San Diego State (2-1) in San Diego.

Big West honors

Running back Joel Thomas, who had 148 yards in Idaho’s 31-14 win over Eastern Washington on Saturday, has been named the Big West Conference offensive player of the week.

Boise State kicker Todd Belcastro, from Spokane’s Mead High, was the conference’s special teams player of the week. He connected on field goals of 51 and 53 yards.
