Ten years ago: Mats Wilander of Sweden won the men’s U.S. Open title in New York.

Five years ago: Antoine Izmery, a prominent supporter of exiled Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was shot and killed outside a church in Port-au-Prince; the UN mission accused Haitian armed forces of involvement. Conductor Erich Leinsdorf died in Zurich, Switzerland, at age 81.

One year ago: The Army issued a searing indictment of itself, asserting that “sexual harassment exists throughout the Army, crossing gender, rank and racial lines.” Scots voted to create their own Parliament after 290 years of union with England.
