Iowa State 27, Iowa 9: At Iowa City, Iowa, Joe Parmentier scored on two short runs and Darren Davis broke loose for 244 yards and a score as the Cyclones (1-1) defeated the Hawkeyes (1-1) to win the intrastate battle for the first time in 16 years.

It also was Iowa State’s first road victory since a 23-22 defeat of Missouri on Nov. 2, 1991.

Illinois 48, Middle Tennessee 20: At Champaign, Ill., Rocky Harvey and Steve Havard combined for 390 yards as the Fighting Illini (1-1) snapped an 18-game losing streak by defeating the Division I-AA Blue Raiders (1-1).

Indiana 45, W. Michigan 30: At Bloomington, Ind., redshirt freshman Antwaan Randle El passed for three touchdowns, ran for three others and set an Indiana record for total offense with 467 yards in leading the Hoosiers (0-1) past the Broncos (1-1).

Duke 44, Northwestern 10: At Evanston, Ill., Spencer Romine threw for 303 yards and a touchdown, and Richmond Flowers caught seven passes for 124 yards as the Blue Devils, 2-0 for the first time since 1994, surprised the Wildcats (0-1).

Purdue 21, Rice 19: At West Lafayette, Ind., Drew Brees passed for 250 yards and two touchdowns as the Boilermakers (1-1) held off the Owls (1-1).

Miami 38, Cincinnati 12: At Cincinnati, Scott Covington threw three touchdown passes and the Hurricane’s (2-0) defense dominated the Bearcats (0-2), despite allowing Cincinnati’s first touchdown in the past 15 quarters played between the two teams.

Eastern Michigan 13, Ball State 7: At Muncie, Ind., Eric Powell ran for 113 yards and a touchdown and Justin Ventura kicked two field goals as the Eagles (1-1, 1-0 MAC) defeated the Cardinals (0-2, 0-1).

Central Michigan 35, W. Illinois 14: At Mount Pleasant, Mich., Eric Flowers rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns as the Chippewas (1-1) snapped a nine-game losing streak by defeating the Leathernecks (1-1).

Youngstown St. 24, Kent 10: At Kent, Ohio, Adrian Brown rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns as the defending Division I-AA champion Penguins (2-0) defeated the Golden Flashes (0-2).

EAST

Boston College 41, Rutgers 14: At Boston, Mike Cloud (156 yards rushing) and quarterback Scott Mutryn each ran for two touchdowns and the Eagles (2-0, 1-0 Big East) rolled past the Scarlet Knights (1-1, 0-1).

Miami, Ohio 14, Army 13: At West Point, N.Y., Travis Prentice’s 45-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the RedHawks (2-0) their first lead and they went on to hold off the Cadets (0-1).

Akron 35, Temple 28: At Philadelphia, Mike Lagasse’s 6-yard run finished a 93-yard, 16-play drive to the deciding score as the Zips (1-1) beat the Owls (0-2).

SOUTH

Auburn 17, Mississippi 0: At Oxford, Miss., Ben Leard threw for 195 yards and a touchdown as the Tigers (1-1, 1-0 SEC) defeated the Rebels (1-1, 1-1).

Kentucky 52, Eastern Kentucky 7: At Lexington, Ky., Tim Couch threw for 372 yards and five touchdowns as the Wildcats (2-0) thrashed the Division I-AA Colonels (1-1) in the first meeting between the two teams.

Mississippi St. 14, Memphis 6: At Memphis, Tenn., James Johnson rushed for 192 yards, including a 62-yard TD, to lead the Bulldogs (2-0) past the Tigers (0-2).

Johnson’s touchdown came on the opening drive for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State didn’t score again until Pig Prather’s 10-yard touchdown run with 29 seconds left.

Alabama 32, Vanderbilt 7: At Birmingham, Ala., Shaun Alexander rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns and the Crimson Tide (2-0, 1-0 SEC) dealt the Commodores (0-2, 0-2) their 20th consecutive conference loss.

Virginia Tech 37, Clemson 0: At Clemson, S.C., Al Clark threw a 56-yard touchdown pass and ran for two scores to lead the Hokies’ (2-0) rout of the Tigers (1-1).

Marshall 42, Troy St. 12: At Huntington, W.Va., Chad Pennington passed for a career-high 437 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Thundering Herd (2-0) over Division I-AA Troy State (1-1).

Cent. Florida 48, E. Illinois 0: At Orlando, Fla., quarterback Daunte Culpepper accounted for seven touchdowns and 479 yards of total offense as the Knights (2-0) defeated the Panthers (0-1), the No. 22 team in Division I-AA.

East Carolina 31, Chattanooga 0: At Greenville, N.C., David Garrard came off the bench to lead the Pirates (1-1) to three second-quarter touchdowns en route to victory over the Division I-AA Mocs (1-1).

SOUTHWEST

Oklahoma 10, TCU 9: At Fort Worth, Texas, the Sooners (2-0) scored a touchdown and field goal in the final 2:20 to defeat the Horned Frogs (1-1).

Sooners quarterback Patrick Fletcher threw a 21-yard TD pass to Chris Blocker with 2:20 left and, after Oklahoma covered an onsides kick, Jeff Ferguson booted a 40-yard field goal with 5 seconds to play.

Tulsa 35, Oklahoma St. 20: At Tulsa, Okla., John Fitzgerald threw three touchdown passes and scored once on the ground to help the Golden Hurricane (2-0) upset the Cowboys (1-1).

Tulane 31, SMU 21: At Dallas, Shaun King (19 of 28, 344 yards) passed for two touchdowns and ran for a score to lead the Green Wave (2-0) over the Mustangs (0-2).

Minnesota 14, Houston 7: At Houston, Billy Cockerham threw for two long first-quarter scores to lead the Golden Gophers (2-0) over the Cougars (0-2).

WEST

Utah 45, Louisville 22: At Salt Lake City, Andre Dyson had three of Utah’s five take-aways as the Utes (2-0) defeated the Cardinals (0-2).

Air Force 52, UNLV 10: At Las Vegas, quarterback Blaine Morgan scored a career-high three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Falcons (2-0, 1-0 WAC) over the Rebels (0-2, 0-1).
