Ten years ago: As Hurricane Gilbert made its way toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, forecasters reported the barometric pressure of Gilbert’s center measured a low of 26.13 inches, making it the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere.

Five years ago: At the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO chairman Yasser Arafat shook hands after signing an accord granting limited Palestinian autonomy.

One year ago: Funeral services were held in Calcutta, India, for Nobel peace laureate Mother Teresa. Kate Shindle of Illinois was crowned Miss America.
