Stay Free At Chalet

Glacier National Park

The Sperry Chalet in Glacier National Park is being opened in September to volunteers willing to exchange elbow grease for spectacular scenery and backcountry accommodations.

Park officials considered opening the chalet to the public at the end of summer for the purpose of putting a $1 million sewage and wastewater treatment system to some use before winter.

Instead, the park decided to recruit volunteers to assist in putting final touches on the refurbished chalet. Four volunteer spots will be available each day, and volunteers are being asked to stay for at least two days and work a minimum of six hours each day.

Work projects will include scraping, sanding, painting, cleaning and general ground maintenance. There may also be some revegetation projects.

Volunteers will have to provide their own food, sleeping bag and be able to hike 6.4 miles to and from the chalet. Cooking facilities and beds will be provided.

Sperry and Granite Park chalets were closed in 1992 to address sewage and wastewater treatment issues.
