Second Man Arrested On Attack Complaint
Sheriff’s deputies have arrested the second of two men wanted in connection with a 17-year-old girl’s complaint that she was driven to an abandoned trailer and attacked.
Alan D. Burtness, 25, was being held Monday in the Kootenai County Jail on charges of first-degree kidnapping and battery in connection with the attack this summer. His bail has been set at $55,000.
The California girl, who was visiting her mother and stepfather in Athol, Idaho, was not seriously injured in the incident. She escaped early July 11 by running through a field, smearing mud on herself to disguise her light complexion and blond hair, and hiding under a car until it started getting light, according to sheriff’s reports.
Another man, 24-year-old Daniel A. McCullough of Coeur d’Alene, has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, battery and possession of stolen property. He is suspected of using the girl’s car after the incident.
The girl told deputies she accepted a ride home from Burtness and McCullough, whom she met at a party after having car trouble.
Instead of driving to her mother’s Athol home, the men drove the girl to an abandoned trailer near Highways 41 and 53 and attacked her, according to court records.
