Dollar Mixed On Foreign Markets

The dollar rose Monday against the Japanese yen and several other currencies as a plan to help Japanese banks ran into trouble, but edged lower against the German mark, Italian lira and Canadian dollar.

Traders said the dollar benefited from the absence of new bombshell disclosures with the release of President Clinton’s videotaped testimony to a grand jury investigating his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

But foreign exchange analysts said worries about the financial health of Brazil and other Latin American countries continued to weigh on the U.S. currency.

The dollar made its strongest advance of the day against the Japanese yen. It was quoted in late New York trading at 134.49 yen.
